'Cloud Atlas' is like the entire 'Matrix' trilogy in micro. It starts out absolutely brilliantly, then segues into a pretentious slog.
It still sounds good to me dammit!

I have to disagree respectfully. Great seeing the cast here at TIFF, but at the end, I just couldn't bring myself to stand up and applaud. This movie could have been "The Tree of Life", but it just seems overlong, overproduced, and not particularly compelling. Not a bad film, but very, very disappointing.

Um.... I don't know how to break this to you...

Tree of Life sucked, I don't know how it got nominated for Best Picture of the year.
Sep 11 - 08:01 PM
Because it was one of the best films of the year, and of the last decade.
Sep 15 - 08:01 AM
Tree of Life was so unbearable. It was hardly even a story.
Oct 1 - 10:40 PM
Then it's probably pretty good. It's been my experience that when the label pretentious is applied, it's usually pretty good.
Sep 9 - 04:19 PM
You don't need a comma there, and your sentence reads that when the label pretentious is applied that label is usually pretty good. How's that for pretentious?
Sep 9 - 08:26 PM
Both pretentious and incorrect.
Sep 10 - 01:59 AM
The point of the comment is that pretentious is not always good, but you're right he needs a conjunction with the comma and a subject for the first part of the sentence. Otherwise, it is ambiguous what he is referencing, and it reads the opposite of what he is trying to imply, but the way I corrected it is grammatically fine; it's just not what he means.

Loki doesn't get laid so he has to let everyone know how smart he is.

"Pretentious": I hate people using this this word.
It means: Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.
I understand you Jordan Hoffman know personally the directing trio and you know exactly what kind of a film were they "attempting" to make because they told you so.
People are dicks nowadays because nobody believes in anybody's sincerity. I haven't seen the film yet and I am not judging its qualities, it might be utter rubbish, just wanted to share a thought on dicks overusing the word "pretentious"

Thank you! Oh and the phrase "You, sir ... " is so stupid now, it's like what 12-year-olds say to people in real life. No one says "you, sir," to anyone face to face, so why say it on the internet?
Oct 1 - 06:23 PM
Well put sir. Often, the people calling out others on being "pretentious", are being pretentious while doing so. Which is hilariously hypocritical on their part.
Oct 1 - 10:45 PM
Aren't most pretentious people sincere? Isn't the problem that they do think they possess a greater importance, talent, culture, etc?
Oct 16 - 05:19 PM
I liked "The Fountain" and it had similar reviews. Odds are this is gonna be awesome.
Oct 3 - 12:54 PM
Too bad the whole Matrix Trilogy was great.
Oct 5 - 03:42 PM
Except for Revolutions XD
Oct 13 - 06:40 AM
Revolutions was fine. People hated it just to hate it.
Oct 23 - 08:10 AM
Nope, I'm pretty sure I didn't like it because it wasn't very good.
Oct 23 - 09:38 AM
I hated it because it freakin sucked. They took a great idea and great movie and rendered it stupid and really kinda borring. I really, really wanted to love Reloaded and Revolutions but from the end of Reloaded through Revolutions the story became unbearable and remarkably stupid.
I didn't care for this movie because it felt the need to makes its point incredibly obvious and then repeat it over and over and over again. But I'd take this over Revolutions any day.
Oct 23 - 10:35 AM
I think the critic refer to 'atlas shrug'...wait, did you say it starts brilliantly before it stinks? nm then.
Oct 7 - 03:41 PM
You ever notice how it's only the negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes that get bombarded with comments? And almost always BEFORE a movie has even come out?
Oct 21 - 05:25 PM
I've always been amused by this. People give the negative reviews crap when they haven't even seen the film yet; they may not even like it themselves. Same shit happened with TDKR, Avengers, Prometheus, Amazing Spider-Man, and so on.
