ENAMORADA: During the Mexican Civil War, a revolutionary general (Pedro Armendariz) and his army take over the small town of Cholula. As the troops ransack the town and treat the citizens with less than respect, the general falls for a wily young woman named Beatriz (Félix), the daughter of one of the town's wealthier citizens. FLOR DE MAYO: Jack Palance gives a strong performance--in Spanish--in this stunningly photographed tale of an American in Mexico who is reunited with a lover from years ago. She is now married to a fisherman, who begins to believe that their child was actually fathered by the foreigner. RIÓ ESCONDIDO: A monumental achievement of Mexican cinema, RIÓ ESCONDIDO is notable in a number of respects. It was directed by Emilio Fernandez, historically one of the most important Latin American filmmakers, at the height of his success and popularity. The star is Maria Félix, an actress with iconic status in Mexico, and the villain is played by Carlos López Moctezuma, who won an Ariel (the Mexican equivalent of the Oscar) for his role in the film. The influence of Sergei Eisenstein on Fernandez is manifest in the film, with a story of poverty-stricken villagers being exploited by a cruel governor. Félix plays a teacher sent by the president to investigate the horrible living conditions and corrupt bureaucracies of the countryside. She arrives in Ciudad Juarez, where greedy thug (López Moctezuma) has seized control of the town and terrorizes its populace.
