Lifshitz has made a serious, at times quite genuine coming-out drama.

As Mathieu (Jérémie Elkaïm, of François Ozon's short film Bed Scenes), a quiet 18-year-old boy, spends yet another holiday with his depressed mother, nosy aunt and clingy sister, he meets a cocksure young man, Cédric (Stéphane Rideau of Wild Reeds). Cédric catches Mathieu's eye while selling candy at the local seaside amusement park. The beautiful, more experienced Cédric begins to pursue Mathieu, and they are soon meeting for clandestine, evening encounters in the dunes. The young men open up to their respective families about the nature of their involvement, and a fragile happiness sets in. Sébastien Lifshitz's intimate direction evokes hot summer nights in France most of us wish we'd had. Like a dream, Come Undone languidly flows back and forth between the past and the present, often asking us to fill the deliberate jumps in time. The audience is allowed to steal very private glances at Mathieu's memories and snapshots of his life, including his loss of innocence. These moments let us experience what happens to Mathieu after he gives in to Cédric's pleas for a life together. He learns to live independently for the first time, far removed from the people whose love he's always taken for granted. -- © 2001 Picture This! Entertainment [More]

Reviews for Come Undone
Deals with sex in terms of feelings, deep feelings, and with no need to reach for a cheap punch line in order to make everything 'acceptable' for audiences.
It's nothing new, but worth a viewing if only for the performances of Elkaïm and Rideau.
Although Come Undone deals with serious, difficult subjects ... it handles them kindly and with little angst.
It impressionistically paints a portrait of a young man attempting to come to grips with himself and with life, without offering any simplistic solutions.
A delicately managed piece that is by turns intimately detailed and elliptical.
I couldn't keep myself from checking my watch as my impatience with incoherent nature of the film grew.
Sticks to a standard of emotional honesty in following Mathieu's journey, and casting a shrewd eye as he stumbles toward self-awareness.
A cut above the average coming-out flick, but stops just short of excellence.
A touching meditation on the most ignored reason why relationships collapse -- love's unscripted exit, stage left.
It captures the uncertainty and emotional turbulence of late adolescence with a poignancy that a more clinically articulate movie never could.
Charged by Rideau's amazingly sexy performance as the most forthright gay character put on screen to date.
Brings maximum subtlety, nuance and insight into the timeless story of first love.
Lives up to its title with its deliberately confusing fractured narrative style and elliptical storytelling.
