At once emotional and richly analytical, the Cosby-Seinfeld encounter alone confirms the serious weight behind this superficially loose, larky documentary.

Starting out at gritty New York City venues like The Comedy Cellar, Gotham Comedy Club, and Caroline's, Seinfeld slowly readjusts to live performances. Backstage in between shows he chats with fellow comedians Colin Quinn and Chris Rock about writing and introducing new material, dealing with dead audiences, and getting comfortable on stage. These conversations convey a compassion and understanding about the struggles faced by all comedians, especially those who are much less established than Seinfeld. One such upstart, Orny Adams, is prominently featured in the film. A determined 29-year-old who wants fame and fortune more than anything else, Orny's journey takes him from the same small NYC venues where Seinfeld performs, to a signing with a manager, and tours to Montreal and L.A. This subplot casts Seinfeld's laid-back personality and more mature approach in a unique light. As Seinfeld graduates to bigger theaters and longer acts, working his way up to a 60-minute show, he finds inspiration in fellow comedians. The climax of the film is Seinfeld's meeting with Bill Cosby, a moment he calls one of the most important of his career. COMEDIAN, directed by Christian Charles and produced by Gary Streiner, is a gift to Seinfeld fans, while its positive tone and uplifting message will appeal to all audiences. [More]

Reviews for Comedian
If you are at all interested in how stand-up sausage gets made, Comedian shows everything that goes into the grinder.
Too bad Kramer couldn't make a guest appearance to liven things up.
There are no deep revelations, no shocking moments of truth, and many, many conversations in which Seinfeld and other comics discuss their acts with discouragement and despair.
The comedian's wavering insecurity is folded into the philosopher's trademark uncertainty, and the movie, with artful deception, exposes its primary subject to be a deeply torn soul.
It's a fascinating behind the scenes look at how hard it is for comedians to do their craft.
Comedian probably would have worked a lot better had it focused entirely on Seinfeld, but as it is, it's still an eye-opening look at the life of a comic.
A simpler, leaner treatment would have been preferable; after all, being about nothing is sometimes funnier than being about something.
A highly watchable documentary that follows the comedian's attempt to develop new stage material.
Mr. Adams seldom seems as funny as he thinks he is. But his blunt observations give the film its cutting edge.
Its power and bite come from the contrast Seinfeld makes with Orny Adams.
Seeing Seinfeld at home as he watches his own appearance on Letterman with a clinical eye reminds you that the key to stand-up is to always make it look easy, even though the reality is anything but.
It takes us finally to the comedy clubs that for so many years we saw only at the beginning and end of Seinfeld.
Feels a little too carefully crafted to be absolutely truthful, but nonetheless yields rich food for thought about the pains of the creative process and the insecurities of the artistic temperament.
[O]ften a capable documentary on an interesting subject, even if it doesn't probe as deeply as it could.
Charles and Streiner put together a film that comes close to re-creating the funny-but-serious environment of stand-up comedy.
Despite apparent motives to the contrary, it ends up being, like [Seinfeld's] revered TV show, about pretty much nothing.
