Comic-Con 2006: New "Hulk" Sequel to Be an "Abomination"
OK, we already knew that Abomination would be the new "Hulk" villain, and we just recently got word that "Transporter 2" director Louis Leterrier would be helming Marvel's "The Incredible Hulk," so what new information did the Comic Con panel have to offer? The promise of "no more poodles."
From Chris Carle's report at IGN FilmForce: "Members of the panel seemed dedicated to distancing themselves from "Hulk." Louis Leterrier said, "The idea… is to make the Hulk action adventure movie everyone wanted to see."
In addition to being an action/adventure movie, Leterrier stated, "It's Marvel's horror movie… It's Frankenstein, it's Jekyll and Hyde and a little Edward Scissorhands." The script is going to hearken back to the television show, focusing on Banner's journey and his difficulty dealing with the monster. "The good thing abour number twos is that you don't waste your time on the origin," said Leterrier.
Regarding the villain: "I think we needed an anti-Hulk this time," said Leterrier. "Abomination is mega-bad Hulk."

 on Jul 24 2006 03:12 AM [b]Eric Bana[/b] I really hope they cast Bana back into the role as Banner. He was fantastic. Not sure why people rag on the first movie. I think it was absolutely necessary to show the origin of the Hulk. Ang Lee set the stage for an amazing sequel, so I hope they don't disrespect what he's done. There were some amazing action sequences in 1 although not enough, but I hope they don't sacrifice good storytelling just so they can stuff it with action set pieces. (Reply to this) |

If his best work is Transporter two, this movie will BITE. Transporter 2 took everything that was cool or likable about Transporter-- the class, the attitude-- and puree'd it into one of the shittiest 80's wannabe sequels I've seen in years. Clue- when you have to rip off a thoroughly mediocre film like MI:2 for it's 'bad serum/good serum' story line, stick to making nudie videos. That's gotta be where they tapped that scrawny chick to play the villian. ..then again, maybe not. Those girls have bodies worth paying attention to. ..And to think they're replacing Ang Lee for this. Yeesh. (Reply to this) |

 on Jul 24 2006 07:10 AM I really don't understand the complains about the first Hulk. Yes, we got relatively little Hulk, but half of the Hulk character is Bruce Banner. He needs screentime to provide the movie with depth. (Reply to this) |

Sometimes in the first half of the film I forgot I was watching the Hulk. This is not a bad thing. It is exploring Banner, who coincidentally is a large part of the hulk story. on Jul 24 2006 11:41 AM I liked the first Hulk but it's true some people want more Hulk smashing action, so why not try to satisfy the action junkies? I don't see why everyone has to hate on movies like this. If you don't like it just wait another few years and they'll make Hulk Begins Again, Directed by Daron Arnofsky. (Reply to this) |

If Transporter 2 is an indication of what a "Hulk Movie" is about, then I'm guessing less intellect, mindless and ridiculous action sequences, and grotesque women dressed in crappy lingerie. I don't know too much about the Hulk. I think the first film is a really interesting approah to this kind of material. I'm thinking of watching it again soon. Ang Lee gets too much flack for it. The David Banner character was kinda created for the movie to show child abuse banner experienced. I think the sequel should have Eric Bana back thou. on Jul 26 2006 01:48 AM I hope I live long enough to see the day when they make all the superhero movies again. I'm hoping the remains of this terribly disgraceful hulk franchise will be washed away when they do it again. If they do a Hulk movie that has emotion and intelligent character design that can keep up with the pace of action that we all wanna see in a Hulk movie, then we'll have a gem on our hands. The first movie was so pathetically boring because they forgot about the Hulk! They could have kept all the strong emotion if they simply intermingled it with the action. Lord of the Rings did it (but I'm sure it's easy to say this shit, and actually doing it is a whole different ball game). Ah whatever. I've lost all faith in American movies. (Reply to this) |

 on Jul 28 2006 08:37 AM The first hulk was far more interesting as a psychological art-flick than it would have been in the hands of Michael Bay and his ilk. Aside from the dramatic force (which was layered a little too thick, I'll admit) the shot compositions and comic book framing techniques were downright original. As far as the story... I've been reading Hulk comics for years and there have always been subtle changes in the backstory, but volume 3 actually integrated the whole "daddy-killed-mommy" thing, and they attribute the Hulks existence to the traumatic event that Bruce had surpressed since he was a child. They suggest that if not for the hidden pain and rage, Banner could've changed into something completely different. So if that twist is good enough for Marvel, its good enough for me! An entire movie of the hulk versus abomination is justified as being action saturated. Thats enough to get me to a theatre. (Reply to this) |
