With COMMENT ÇA VA? (How Is It Going?), Jean-Luc Godard and Anne-Marie Miéville once again explore one of their favorite topics: the infinite profusion of language and images that surround society. The fractured, abstract film follows the workers of a communist journal who decide to publicize their paper by producing an informational video and film. But when they begin to question what form the endeavor should take, the confusion introduced becomes the focal point of their presentation. This is due in large part to Odette (Miéville), an employee who has some highly creative--and irregular--thoughts on the subject. In criticizing the images captured on video as well as the text that accompanies most of the paper's photographs, Odette begs for a deeper investigation into what it is that makes humans process the world: sight, thought, or perhaps even more subconscious sensory influences. As is typical during this period of exploration between Godard and Miéville, they use the cinematic medium itself to further probe their dilemma. In this case, their techniques of choice are double exposures, still imagery, and the manipulation of text. The result is a thought-provoking, intelligent essay that also works as a powerful commentary regarding the media's ability to shape world culture. [More]
