"Red Sonja" to Make Her Big-Screen Return
by Scott Weinberg | May 02, 2006
Discuss Article
1985's (frankly and unintentionally hilarious) "Red Sonja" was originally meant to be a second sequel to "Conan the Barbarian," but a whole bunch of confusing legal problems dictated that the Arnold Schwarzenegger be called "Calidor" instead of "Conan" in the flick. I told you that trivial tidbit so I could tell you this one: a new "Red Sonja" movie is on its way.

According to Variety, "Millennium and Emmett/Furla picked up the film rights from Red Sonja, home of the comicbook property. Last year, Dynamite Entertainment launched a new Red Sonja series that has gone on to be one of the bestselling indie comicbooks on the market.

Red Sonja, created by sword-and-sorcery legend Robert E. Howard, was introduced into Marvel's "Conan the Barbarian" comics in 1973 and soon was given her own title.

The 1985 "Red Sonja" pic, toplining Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger, was released by MGM to dismal box office numbers. Because of rights issues, Schwarzenegger's character couldn't be called Conan in the film, which was directed by Richard Fleischer.

"The first movie was not a good one -- all the more reason to remake it. It is a great character and a great brand," said Joe Gatta, head of Millennium Films."

wasn't there talks about a third conan as well?
arnie is too old now to be doing these kind of movies without mentioning he has another job... but it just won't be the same without him!

the only way to do conan any justice is remake it. Arnold is done with the role and John Milius can't seem to get the project off the ground. Give up all hope conan is a politician now.

What actually interesting about Arnie is that he was (and I say WAS because he NOW a flabby 60 year old politician) the man ever with a "Mr. Universe" body who could actually pull off the Boris Vallejo look without looking completely ridiculous. I mean seriously... who the hell could you possibly cast as Conan in this day and age?

Red Sonja on the other hand could be casted pretty easy, and doesn't necasarily have to have Conan (or even For-Legal-Reasons-Not-Conan) in it.

who can play Red Sonja? I remember Briggette was pretty hot in it!

Who do we have to pick from? Kate Beckinsale? shes tough and hot, Jessica Beil? I dunno what do you guys think?

I hate to say it, but Angelina Jolie or Jessica Alba might be able to pull it off. But I'm gonna have to say that they should stick with a talented unknown actress. And Jason Statham could be Conan, but his accent would get in the way.

Triple H could be a cool Conan. (stop laughing) If you saw Wrestlemania this year, he came to the ring as a fur-cape wearing barbarian. Not sure if that was a ploy to push him as Conan or not, but it looked REALLY GOOD.

BUT please, please, please DO NOT CAST that non-acting Barbie Doll Jessica Alba as Red Sonja! I will BOYCOTT that movie if that happens.

One pick for Red I would like to see would be Tricia Helfer of the revamped BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. She's got the bod AND the acting chops to pull it off.

Jessica Biel could DEFINITELY pull it off as well.

If this happens I hope that for the love of god they pick a woman with some kind of muscle. None of the women mentioned so far has a lick of muscle except for Tricia Helfer. She need not be freaky muscly but a chick that looks like she gets some kind of serious exercise.

Jessica Biel!!!!!

Nuff said!

She would've been a better Daisy Duke as well, and she should also play Wonder Woman.

Why don't they make another conan the barbarian. I don't even mind a remake. I was impressed with Red Sonja back then. Now, maybe if they get Kristianna Loken to play Sonja.....hmmm...and the Rock as Conan. Kate Beckingsale is also at the top of my list.

Arnie looks better at 60 years old & heart surgery than most of us could ever hope for. I think some people just take joy from seeing somebody who has accomplished so much more in life physically, professionally & financially finaly being made more human by the ravages of age.

Jason is too small and his face is too refined...he would make the perfect "Hitman" though....I can't believe they cast Vin Diesel in that role...what a crime!

Thanks Dad, your absolutely right. My only point is that he doesn't have the Conan bod anymore, which is not an insult to a 60 year old, so please try not to hyperventilate. I see no shame in getting old, we all will some day (we hope), but it does mean we won't be able to do something things we used to, like play Conan (who BTW aged miserably and died alone an unhappy).

Jessica Biel is a terrible actor, she's never done any memorable roles and she's definetely not an action star.

I'd say Hilary Swank, she looked really muscled in Million Dollar baby and plus, she can actually act.
