New Line May Be Resurrecting "Conan"
by Scott Weinberg | June 29, 2007
Discuss Article
The property languished at Warner Bros. for the better part of a decade without any movies coming out of the process. Now maybe New Line will have some better luck.

The studio is looking at a $1 million price tag for a years' worth of screen rights on Robert E. Howard's classic barbarian character. Obviously the success of "300" has moviemakers all excited about the next big 'swords & sandals' epic, and obviously Conan would make for a pretty big tentpole release.

The property belonged to Universal when they released the excellent "Conan the Barbarian" and the rather goofy "Conan the Destroyer," but the character has remained dormant, movie-wise, since the mid-'80s. Several filmmakers (including John Milius, Robert Rodriguez, and the Wachowskis) have been attached at some point, but with the project leaving WB, that puts everything back at square one again. More info as it becomes available.

Then again, a leap from WB to New Line isn't that big a leap at all. Don't they have the same parent companies?

I find this language slightly homoerotic. I wonder which people will be getting a "tentpole" from this movie.

(It's kind of funny that I make a post of this nature. I normal get mad at people that point to erotic undertones in 300 and like movies) Just couldn't resist.

Highlander won the academy award for best movie ever so really it probalby is time to make a remake...the question is what do you remake? the original? one of the several tv shows? or the movies based on the subsequent tv shows or the movie that came out a year or so ago....
never mind let's just move on to Thor, you know that's going to be homoerotic as hell!

If they could do a 300 esque Conan it would be amazing.
A little less over the top, but the film style would go really well with the conan Universe.

Also many of those actors were in the right shape to play Conan IMO.
Arnold is the best, but I wouldn't mind seeing the next Conan more streamlined.

-Though maybe Bana would be a good choice.

There is only one true gay Conan...
the homoerotic ex-bodybuilder/ action hero turned governator Arnold Scwarzzeneger . Those scenes still make me ''homo '' phobe.

I'd love another Conan movie if it was done well. Too many Swords and Sorcerey movies become silly and childish when they attempt to make them lately. I say 300 is quite the same genre, but obviously well done. It would be hard not to see Arny as Conan, but I could live without him.

The best thing about the old movies was that they made magic so beleivable with a serious lack of special effect capabilities. Not to mention the bad ass soundtracks mixed with semi-gory fights scenes. I love those movies.

If they do it as well as Dark Horse is making the new line of Conan comics at the moment, this film will rock.

First of all, Conan should not be like 300. Conan is about killing and having sex with women, not lofty ideas like glory and honor.

Stop citing the sacrilege, please.

Nay to that as well. I would encourage originality or tradition over mimicry.

I just wouldn't want it to be anything like 300 because 300 was awful.

Make it a swords and sorcery action film with it's own unique visual style and it might be alright. Arnold boobs would jiggle in every battle scene, not a pretty picture.

As for 300
"You know, they got the name "300" by measuring how gay it was on a scale of 1-10" - Sarah Silverman

I think the Conan stories would work today, but they would have to do a reboot (as in Batman). No Arnold. Better script.

I see I left the word 'not' out of my previous post. I meant to say that 300 is not quite the same genre.

My point was that I wanted the movie to be made seriously and well, like 300 was, not in the same style.

I was hoping this would be a big-screen version of Late Night with Conan O'Brien. That would rock.

Dude they should get Josh Holloway (Sewyer from LOST) to play Conan. If he can ditch his accent i think he fits the build and personality youd want in a Conan. He is a womanising brut.
