That's a pretty solidified Top 10. But there could be argument made for films like "Crazy Heart", "The Messenger" & "A Single Man" as all three had higher reviews then "Invictus" (also just to mention even higher then "Avatar".) Not to take anything away from either film though by any means. I'm just saying, either of those three films could very much deserve it just as much if not more. But again, it's an overall a pretty solidified & broad Top 10.

I think this is a pretty good list that actually acknowledges films that connected with audiences this year, not that it should be a popularity contest, but the three sci fi films and up all showed major legs during their runs

Yeah, I'm satisfied with that Top 10 as well. Great to see some variety.

I'm glad Avatar, Star Trek, District 9, Up and Inglourious Basterds made it. Those were 5 of my favorite movies of 2009. I would have liked to see The Hurt Locker but it was a limited release.

Hey! an actually solid top 10 list.

it would have been a great list if other movies like (500) Days of Summer or Paranormal Activity were in it but i really not that excited over Up In The Air i thought it was over rated

DKUK

DKUK on 01-5-2010 07:39 PM

I saw Paranormal Activity for the first time yesterday and it was one of those films that had me screaming at the characters, for me, I couldn't understand half the things they did. Like why they never turned on the lights or why they didn't go spend the night with other people, y'know, safety in numbers; why Micah was such am idiot...I'll admit, when I'm falling asleep and I'm wondering about all those strange noises I can hear, it did make me think of the film. But IMO it wasn't a great film. But if I take into account the paltry amount they spent to make the film, well then that's another argument... ;o)

In response to one thing DKUK pointed out with Paranormal Activity, the only thing I can explain is why they didn't go to someone elses house. In PA they do make the point that they could very well go to someone elses house but the demon would follow them and continue its rampage in a new setting. Pretty much stating that changing location is just futile, but it was a satisfying way for the director to keep the filming location in his house :P.

On the topic of the nominations, I am very pleased with what made it. I almost wish this was what the Oscars would pick but realistically I know it isn't lol. Hurt Locker is my prediction to win best picture this year, although that might get shutdown with the momentum that Avatar is gaining. I'd also like to say I'm very pleased with the animation category (although disappointed Ponyo got shut out again). All 5 movies were really good animation movies and I have to say that this is one of the best years in a while for animation. I'm actually excited to see who will win this category when it comes to the Oscars, however my guess is Up.

The only one on this list I have seen is Star Trek. Go that movie... Not much else to say.

@Chris C.

Wow! I don't believe I forgot to mention "(500) Days Of Summer" (must have slipped my mind when I was typing.) But the film had just as high reviews with those other films I mentioned. An argument could be very much made for "(500) Days Of Summer" just like the other films I mentioned. But again, this Top 10 list is pretty solid to say the least.

But "Paranormal Activity"? Seriously? For Best Picture? That's an outragerously laughable mention. That film is not Best Picture quality by any means (even though the film is a satisfactory film for what it's for). I understand wanting a broad & extensive Best Picture catagory which does have specific elements & stipulations that has to be matched but what you want is a boundless & non-specific Best Picture catagory that basically, everything goes. Last I checked, this isn't People's Choice (which is just the general public's view of films which usually is pretty narrow) or MTV Awards (which is just a popularity contest). Why doesn't the Academy then just nominate "The Twilight Saga: New Moon". Come on...Let's be realistic here. The Academy Awards is about the craft & skillset of film, filmmaking & it's storytelling.

As far as "Up In The Air"? While you have your subjective opinion & taste. I would have to disagree entirely on a vast amount of accounts in the matter "Up In The Air" is overrated.

@NTROST

Sorry if im a little late, nut yes you are kinda right the problem is the category itself most horror movies lost touch after the late 70's, but there is no way in hell i would say New Moon would deserves a nomination.

my only problem was is that Up In The Air was said to be really good but when i watched it i just didnt feel the way critics did.

and as for you cutler shut the **** up for once in your stupid life

The awards are for the producers of these films. It's the Producers Guild Awards. It's an industry award. This award ceremony isn't for the public. The Producers Guild Awards usually show what you can expect from the Academy Awards.

Out of the selection, I've seen Avatar, D9, The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds and Star Trek.

All of these were pretty good, although, Avatar would rank the lowest on my list because of its story and dialogue. It had good effects though.

If I had to put them in order, I would say:

D9 > Star Trek > Inglorious Basterds > The Hurt Locker > Avatar

I am planning to see Up, An Education and Up in the Air.

JoelParkes on 01-6-2010 02:58 AM

I just watched 'Inglourious Basterds' again last night and, to be honest, it didn't hold up well on second viewing. It's a film that relies on shock to carry it through and, once you've been shocked, it falls flat. The opening scene, of course, and the shoot out in the cafe still stand the test of time but the rest felt plodding and, dare I say it, boring, almost juvenile. Not quite sure why this is on the list here. '500 Days Of Summer' would have been a welcome addition

Oh i love how sad NTROST is.

"The Academy Awards is about the craft & skillset of film, filmmaking & it's storytelling."

Really? Is that why Al Gore won an award for making a ****ty movie, is that why WallE got screwed over last year and lost music awards to a ****ty bollywood movie? Is that why Hallie Berry won an award for having sex with Billy Bob Thorton?

You are a sad little man with no understanding of reality

Oh Ntrost just lacks common sense he had no idea what he is talking about so he just talks on. Sad little nerd.

You need to learn before you talk.

"The Academy Awards is about the craft & skillset of film, filmmaking & it's storytelling"

That might be the funniest statement i have ever heard. I got one thing to say to that:

"Three Six Mafia: Hard out there for a Pimp"

NTROST

NTROST on 01-6-2010 02:21 PM

Hahaha...The Three Six Mafia thing is funny but that was more of a political move which if you knew? Politics (sadly) does have a play with the Academy at times on nominations & winners (sadly). You seem to have a exceedingly hard time to grasp how the Academy works but then you have hard enough time just knowing the conceptualizations of a solid film.
