Jonathan Demme directs this documentary based on the life of his childhood hero, his cousin Bobby. Demme chooses to contact this cousin, Robert Castle, after having not seen him for more than 30 years. Castle is not just a charming character; he is a politically radical Episcopalian minister battling against the poverty, racism, and drugs that blight Harlem. The film not only tells the story of Castle's life and job but also includes the discovery and recovery of the cousin and the filmmaker's relationship. Reverend Castle was fairly conventional at an earlier stage in his life; then, during the 1960s, he became a close friend to Black Panther Isaiah Rowley. This friendship manifested at a time when the Panthers were feared and hated. After losing a lucrative living because of his politics, Bobby made his way to Harlem, where he now combines the Episcopalian tradition, black gospel, and social activism in equal measures. Demme's highly personal and intelligent open style allows for the inclusion of a wide variety of thoughts and opinions. Filmed during the Bush years, COUSIN BOBBY also serves as a reminder that the left wing is still alive and kicking. [Less]
