Inspired by Jesus Christ’s own walk up the hill to Calvary, Arthur Blessitt began a 40-year trip around the world with a 12-foot wooden cross. Blessitt started his trek near his home in California, then brought his message across the United States to the Atlantic coast. Next on Blessitt’s itinerary was Northern Ireland, followed by the rest of the countries in the world, including those marked by communism and war. THE CROSS captures Blessitt’s faith-filled, four-decade expedition, culminating in 2008 after he visited every island group in the world. [More]

It would be nice to be able to call The Cross a mockumentary. But the director's Christian Broadcasting background makes it extremely unlikely that his intention was provide viewers with a good laugh at the expense of the Blessitt Arthur.

A profoundly engrossing and inspirational film that candidly explores Arthur Blessitt's passionate heart, mind and soul, but feels somewhat incomplete without enough insight into his life beyond his courageous journeys around the world.

This wannabe-inspirational docu shares its hero's devotion to preaching the gospel. But the film's emotional manipulations come at the expense of a more complex, illuminating look at the man himself.

Heartfelt but pedestrian, so to speak, documentary of an evangelist who for decades carried a 12-foot wooden cross around the globe to spread the gospel.

Director Matthew Crouch piles up Blessitt-story after Blessitt-story, but never finds The Story. It's just a mess.

The gee-whiz rhetoric and breathless amateurism of The Cross is not likely to inspire.

The documentary The Cross is not going to displace The Ten Commandments as the official movie of the Easter season.

What inspired his faith in the first place? Does he have family? How did his constant wandering affect them?

In telling the story of globe-trotting evangelist Arthur Blessitt, director Matthew Crouch allows Christian priorities to gloss over details that a more objective filmmaker would consider essential.

The Cross opts to be a wan inspirational film that rams its Christian message down your throat -- which is, ironically, the exact opposite of Blessitt’s soft sell.
