Based on a novel by Wang Du Lu, CROUCHING TIGER starts with the revenge plot common in the wuxia stories that Lee loved as a child, then adds a feminist twist. Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat) is a legendary martial artist who has decided to pass on his sword, the Green Destiny, to a friend. Soon afterward, the sword is stolen by a masked female, setting in motion events that test the bonds of family, love, duty, and sisterhood. Chow appears with three generations of female stars: Cheng Pei Pei, a 1960s action heroine; Michelle Yeoh, the beauty queen turned 1980s action goddess; and newcomer Zhang Ziyi, who smolders as the princess who wants more than domestic tranquillity. Famed action choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping (THE MATRIX) stages jaw-dropping zero-G fights across rooftops, rivers, and bamboo trees, while Yo-Yo Ma punctuates the fisticuffs with dramatic cello solos. Described by Lee as "SENSE AND SENSIBILITY with martial arts," CROUCHING TIGER recalls the best wuxia films of the 1960s and pushes the genre in new directions. [More]

Reviews for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
This is an exciting, mystical, romantic surprise of a film that really puts the 'art' in 'martial arts.'
So good, it reminds you how the best films transport you to another world.
You may never see a more beautiful movie - and certainly no more majestic film has yet been made.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a magical dream of a martial arts epic. It surpasses any you've ever seen.
It is such an imaginative melange with such spectacular effects that it makes The Matrix look rote by comparison.
A nearly perfect film, and at this writing (December 17) it looks to me like the best of the year.
One of the best adventure movies of the last decade, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is also gravely, eerily beautiful: poetic and moving in ways that we usually don't associate with violent genre films.
Os personagens da história acabam tornando-se mais notáveis do que suas próprias qualidades como lutadores.
Not since Sandy Duncan's version of "Peter Pan" has such a cinematic masterpiece been caught on film.
Successfully applies its fantastical elements to develop story, character, and a kind of poetic license that captures the beauty of its own spirit.
Crouching Tiger is a fine introduction to the genre for newcomers, though specialists might find it thin in comparison to the real thing.
A near-masterpiece, replete with marvelously fanciful images and a touching love story.
