Damsels in Distress Reviews

Unusual but funny. The script is witty and hilarious in its college level pomposity. The acting is outstanding and it makes a good contrast to a movie like Animal House, which is another nonsensical movie about the college and frat experience, although about four decades apart. The ending to this flick is great--light and fluffy--a nice change from way too serious type movies.

Damsels in Distress has some supporting characters and moments that take the humor a little to ridiculous, but Violet, played by the ever-charismatic Greta Gerwig, is such a unique, complex, and hilarious character that really propels the movie forward.

This is quite possibly the worst movie ever made...

This film is worth watching just for the speech by the frat boy Thor about the value of learning. This offers a wonderful and funny spoof of the seriousness and silliness of our glorified "college years."

I've always liked Whit Stillman, but the existential angst and constant talking, talking, talking that I loved so much in "Metropolitan" and "Barcelona" grew tiresome in this movie...

Hilarious deadpan. A story of self-righteous nostalgic college girls.

Greta Gerwig in a tailspin in Whit Stillman's world.

While perhaps not as satirically biting as it seems to think/hope it is, there are enough witty comments about human behavior and charming, if not knock-out, performances by the cast (Gerwig and Tipton are perfectly cast) to make this a success in my book.

Recomendable.

will never get this movie out of my head. it's hard to say if that's good or bad.

I like Shawkat and Plaza, sadly they only get cameos. "A mannered comedy that's an acquired taste." Echikunwoke is gorgeous. Not a fan of Gerwig or the annoying, haughty way her character Violet speaks. A stupid chick flick with few good laughs. "Its characters are unrecognizable to those of us inhabiting the real world, and despite its mounds and mounds of dialogue, it ultimately doesn't have a sticking thought in its pretty head."

An odd but fun little movie. I wish it had skewed a little more toward the absurd, but even with its uneven tone it was very enjoyable.

i have to assume a certain level of satiric intention behind this otherwise it deserves one less star.

This is a waste of time, horribly written and acted. There is no plot or entertainment factor. It is not cute, fun, funny or anything but pure shit.

(2012) Damsels In Distress
Written, directed and produced by Whit Stillman which the college or university(I'm not totally clear which one) only serves as a backdrop to many theories and philosophies spoken by it's young teenage female cast. At the start, a new student arrives Lily (Analeigh Tipton) and a group of 3 young teenage girls acknowledges and accepts her just because they know that she happens to share the same dorm as them. The group of 3 girls seems to be lead by a blond teen girl by the name of Violet(Greta Gerwig) who seems to start up a "Suicide Prevention Centre" around the schooling area who often clashes with other groups such as the college newspaper called "The Daily Complainer", and it's always one group putting down the other. Sport activities and jocks seem to be absent in this film and much of the main teenage boys seem to act like morons and are present because their interactions with other peers. Aforementioned, although there are many irregular words not spoken often in films, and many theories said, the spoken dialogue can't be fully understood from one sitting or by watching it on the big screen, but can be understood if viewers know what they're saying if it's watched with the "Close captioning" turned on since they're many tidbits and philosophies about individual oppression, depression, and optimism. To some critics, it's pointless but as a result of recognizing many conversations, nuance claims and so forth and it's theories, it'll become easier to resonate with it's dialogue or discussions the more I were to watch it. I mean, can tap dancing really help depression? which was one of the things this film addresses.
Footnote: The movies title "Damsels in Distress" is similar to Fred Astaire And Ginger Rogers title "A Damsel in Distress" which a homage was dedicated to them involving the characters dancing even though it's not the best dance sequence I had ever saw though, it's the thought that counts.
3 out of 4 stars

Kind of cute. Very quotable. Funny for people with a lot of social anxiety. General sentiment that college is kind of the worst.

there was something not right from the get go, perhaps the wooden acting from the lead or what appeared to be a unconvincing attempt at sounding well spoken, but I turned it off after 10 minutes...

a trio of beautiful girls? are you kidding me? Sorry this is one of those films that you either get or you don't, I didn't! For the most part it was just annoying, the characters were awful, the main girl ( I can't even remember her name, it would have been a flower, would never have had one friend let alone 3, she was so annoying. I imagine having a conversation with her, but it hurt my brain so I gave up. My advice give it a miss.

Je ne sais pas quoi en penser! Ça faisait longtemps que je n'avais pas vu un film aussi dingue!

its cast and names spell out indie gem however this is a indie piece of glass that is slow and seems to even force itself back to life at the end
