Consensus: A grand, sweeping epic with inarguably noble intentions and arresting cinematography, but one whose center, arguably, is not as weighty as it should be.

John Dunbar (Costner) asks to be reassigned to the western frontier before it disappears. At his isolated post he develops a relationship with the peaceful Lakota Sioux and a white woman (an excellent, Oscar-nominated Mary McDonnell) who lives among them, finding greater kinship with them than with his own people. But his life with the Sioux is threatened when the Army appears, and Dunbar must decide where his loyalties truly lie. Co-starring Graham Greene, DANCES WITH WOLVES boasts seven Academy Award wins and another five nominations. [More]

Reviews for Dances with Wolves
Despite its empathy and respect for Native Americans, the film has very little going for it besides its admittedly majestic trappings.
Its triumph is that it is never exactly boring, only dulled. It's a movie in acute need of sharpening.
...a literate script, gorgeous scenery, and fine acting combine to produce a poignant and inspiring cinematic experience.
Shining parable about hospitality, a human resource that seems to be underrated and in short supply in our world rife with hostilities.
Even those of us who grew up with Broken Arrow or Cheyenne Autumn or A Man Called Horse or Little Big Man will be affected by Costner's heartfelt tribute to this vanished culture.
Still enthrals with its sweeping direction, gentle humour and lack of pretension.
Costner has single-handedly revived the Western to its deserved state as both an entertaining and artistic form.
Costner (with Michael Blake's screenplay) creates a vision so childlike, so willfully romantic, it's hard to put up a fight.
A stunning combination of all-American boyishness and sweeping grandeur.
