(At Apple stores in four cities, but still, it's a premiere.)

Wes Anderson fans in or near New York, Chicago, Santa Monica, and San Francisco, take note: Hotel Chevalier is coming to an Apple store near you.

It's coming today, actually, so if you were thinking about burning a sick day at work, the following press release will give you all the extra motivation you need:

"Wes Anderson's short film Hotel Chevalier (part 1 of The Darjeeling Limited) will exclusively premiere in four select Apple stores on Tuesday, September 25. Writer/Director Wes Anderson, actor Jason Schwartzman and actress Natalie Portman will appear in the Apple Store SoHo to introduce the film and host a short Q&A following the screening; Roman Coppola (co-writer, Darjeeling) will introduce the short at the Apple Store North Michigan Avenue (Chicago). The after hours events will also take place at the Apple Store Third Street Promenade (Santa Monica) and Apple Store San Francisco (Union Square). Beginning on September 26th, following the in-store premiere, Hotel Chevalier will be available as a free download exclusively on iTunes. Guests interested in attending the in store events should go to Apple.com for store event calendars for each location.

"Hotel Chevalier is a short film set in a hotel room in France starring Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman. It is the brief coda to a doomed romance and the prologue to The Darjeeling Limited.

"In director Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited, three American brothers who have not spoken to each other in a year set off on a train voyage across India with a plan to find themselves and bond with each other -- to become brothers again like they used to be. Their "spiritual quest", however, veers rapidly off-course (due to events involving over-the-counter pain killers, Indian cough syrup, and pepper spray), and they eventually find themselves stranded alone in the middle of the desert with eleven suitcases, a printer, and a laminating machine. At this moment, a new, unplanned journey suddenly begins. Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and Jason Schwartzman star in this film about their adventure and their friendship.

wow, i've never heard of something like this. it's cool that itunes isn't doing anything stupid like charging 99 cents for the download. it's also an interesting way to build some word-of-mouth for the type of film that will need it to get people in the seats. if this was a blockbuster trying to bait people, i would find it retarded. but i like the link-up with apple. as wes anderson, if you're gonna do something this blatantly corporate, it might as well be with mac. i'm down.

Cool that it's feee, and I guess despite Portman being attached to Darjeeling, she's only in this short that shows before the movie.

FREE?!?! ****, thats awesome. As if i needed another reason to see it. Im just glad we get to see it at all considering it wasn't going to be shown in front of the film.

I'm actually glad this is getting out there. I saw Darjeeling recently and there's so much in the film that's referencial of the short that it'd have been a shame for people to miss it.

Whatever you do, see Hotel Chevalier first, people, even if it means a wait for DVD.

Thanks to the "exclusive" deal with iTunes, a lot of people will not actually be able to see this short film because it is only available on the US version of the iTunes store. Even existing iTunes customers can't watch it if they happen to live in other countries. Boycott Darjeeling until they release Hotel everywhere first.

drdredom: the US release of Darjeeling is imminent. There's nothing to suggest a deal won't be done in other countries in time for their release windows.
