Dark Shadows' only meaningful relationship is between Depp and his audience. He's a persona now, no longer an actor.
I agree. That is what he has become. He was once a very fine actor.

"Was"?! He still is one of the best actors ever. He's legendary.

It's not proper to put your opinion as fact.

He plays a great vampire though...

Exactly. Could not get into it though it had many Burton touches which made it watchable. Not bad, but just not connectable. Did not feel like you knew the characters, and Johnny Depp and Eva did not have enough interaction before coming to the conclusion that they had a hidden love for each other. Not quite enough buildup and felt rather incomplete and rushed for that reason. Became more of a Johnny Depp show

I think it started with the Pirates of the Caribbean. Now people just go to watch his movies because Depp is in it... and then get massively disappointed afterwards. Sadly, I'm one of those people and yet I keep waiting for a movie that will break this dismal string of disasters

He is stil a fine actor, that can not be taken away from him. He is very versatile and does all kinds of genres despite what the critics might say. That is an actor.

Yeah, that's just a silly proclamation. He's clearly still capable of playing whatever role gets thrown at him. This character is much different than the characters from "The Rum Diary" and "Public Enemies". It's basically a meaningless proclamation as well, since "his audience" is made up of millions of fans. It's not like he's a "niche" actor.
