Critics Consensus: Date Night Is An OK Night on The Town

Plus, guess Letters to God's Tomatometer!

This week at the movies, we've got a wild night on the town (Date Night, starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey) and some supernatural snail-mail (Letters to God, starring Tanner Maguire and Jeffrey S. Johnson). What do the critics have to say?

Date Night

Steve Carell and Tina Fey are two very funny people. So it seems like a no-brainer that a comedy featuring the two of them as a married couple out on the town would be a can't-miss proposition, right? Well, sort of: critics say Date Night is best when its two stars are riffing off each other, and adrift when it focuses on its caper elements. Our heroes are a bored New Jersey couple that gets all gussied up for a trek to Manhattan - and, after a case of mistaken identity, find themselves on the run from assorted underworld characters. The pundits say Carell and Fey have tangible chemistry, and there are some excellent turns from various supporting players (including Mark Wahlberg, Taraji P. Henson, and James Franco), but ultimately, the action movie clichés push the comedic elements to the side. (Check out this week's Total Recall, in which we count down Carell's best-reviewed movies.)

Letters to God

It remains to be seen if the Christian-themed drama Letters to God will warm hearts and jerk tears, since it was barely screened for critics prior to its release. Letters to God is the tale of an eight-year-old suffering from terminal cancer who writes missives to the Almighty - an act that inspires a down-on-his-luck postal worker to change his life. Kids, time to Guess that Tomatometer!

Also opening this week in limited release:

  • The Misfortunates, a coming-of-age dramedy about a young man growing up in a wildly dysfunctional Belgian family, is at 100 percent.
  • The Aussie import The Square, a thriller about a man who becomes entangled in an adulterous affair, is at 96 percent.
  • Women Without Men, a drama about four Iranian women set during the era when the Shah seized power, is at 80 percent.
  • When You're Strange: A Film About the Doors, a documentary about the Lizard King and his associates, is at 58 percent.
  • Who Do You Love, a musical bio of the legendary blues label Chess Records, is at 45 percent.
  • After.Life, starring Liam Neeson and Christina Ricci in a drama about a young woman on the cusp of death who attempts to revive herself, is at 31 percent.

Finally, mad props to De A Twist, who came the closest to guessing Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too's 35 percent Tomatometer.

Date Night is actually funny? Wonderful. May check that out. Alone.

Letters to God. Hmm christian themed drama. Critics will probably consider it overly sappy and stupid. 20%. Even though I'm sure it isn't nearly as bad as its going to get labeled.

Im surprised Date Night was fresh. I have high hopes but have a feeling that director Shawn Levy is going to ruin it.

Date Night seems okay, but that's about it. I'll give it a watch eventually.
It looks like a far better version of Did You Hear About The Morgans?, which was about as good as being impaled through the @ss.

I thought Date Night would get in the 50 - 60 range. I figured Shawn Levy directing would balance out the potential of Carell and Fey, so no surprises there. Letters to God, I'd say maybe 36%?

I have never even heard of Letters of God before I saw this critics consensus. It seems that it will do very poorly at the box office and I suspect that not even devout Christians will flock to it. Publicity in the form of movie reviews could have helped it alot. Maybe it is advertising through Christian Media but who knows.

I'd guess a RT around the range for being overly sappy and poorly acted, but that is only a very rough estimate as I know nothing about this movie.

Date Night seems that it could be very fun. At least through the trailer and commericals it seems that Carell and Fey have great chemistry. It really sucks that the overall misplaced identity thing is dragging it down. Had it been a straight up comedy about a bored married couple it very well could have been very intriguing.

DATE NIGHT looks funny. I will go see it on its first day because I like Fey & Carell.
LETTERS TO GOD looks very bland and sappy, like a Lifetime movie. I would guess it will be lucky to reach 40. I'd avoid this one at all costs -- though I think children will get the most out of it as they'll relate to the kid.

Saw Date Night last night on a real date night with my wife, cheesy I know.

But it was actually quite fun. I would rate it 6 or 7 out of 10. Fey and Carel play off each other so damn well. Also, the blooper reels at the end let in some details that Carel and Fey ad libbed a fair bit of the comedic sections.

I can see movies starring those two becoming a franchise.

Yeah, supercujo, the latter day Doris Day & Rock Hudson (or Julia Roberts & Richard Gere). That's a good recommendation.

Maybe I'll give Date Night a shot, it might just be a good diversion, but I plan to visit my local Art-House this week. Letters to God I'll say 35%

So basically, Letters to God uses a dying, cancer-riddled 8 year old as a plot device to making someone else's life better?

Wonderful.

Date Night might be worth a rental when it comes out. On paper, it seems a little over-reliant on star power, but at least they're two stars with a fairly large core audience.

Titans wins again this weekend.
