When a radical change in the temperature of the world's oceans causes deadly storms and sets a new Ice Age in motion, climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) must race from Washington D.C. to save his son, Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal), in the subzero climes of New York City. Elsewhere, tornadoes and hail menace the globe, leading to international disasters on an extraordinary level. Emmerich, who has proven to be a master of big-budget cinematic destruction on numerous occasions, aims to outdo himself with THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. Here entire cities are ripped apart, flooded, and/or frozen, adding up to one of the biggest disaster movies ever filmed. Although astonishingly rendered special effects rule the movie, adept actors such as Quaid and Gyllenhaal (along with Sela Ward, Ian Holm, Emmy Rossum, and others) turn in solid performances that help to balance out the meteorological mayhem. Surprisingly, Emmerich also uses the film as a vehicle for clever moments of social and political commentary, making THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW admirably smarter and considerably more entertaining than typical Hollywood blockbusters. The Day After Tomorrow is enjoyable in its junky way.

A pretty good disaster movie despite some silliness and lapses in logic.

You expect great spectacle, you don't expect smart dialogue and scientific believability. In that sense, the film doesn't disappoint.

Most of the movie is spent watching Jack Gyllenhaal shiver ominously next to Steve Urkel.

Besides being an exciting and suspenseful movie, 'The Day After Tomorrow' should be a wake-up call for us all.

A big, dumb movie, another Hollywood entertainment that, instead of tweaking and teasing our brains for fun, leaves us feeling thick and stupid.

The real star here is some excellent computer-generated effects that actually look real.

Sua fragilidade narrativa pouco significa frente à boa causa que representa. Além disso, é sempre divertido ver (nas telas) ondas gigantes cobrindo uma metrópole, não é mesmo?

[It] delivers Emmerich's two trademarks, spectacularly cool special-effects shots and hilariously overwrought disaster-movie dialogue.

The Day After Tomorrow isn't just bad, it's Godzilla bad, on a par with Emmerich's previous cinematic low point.

The Day After Tomorrow isn't satisfying in every way, but in the ways that really matter, it's one superior disaster movie.
