Critics Consensus: Day the Earth Stood Still Is Lost In Space
Plus, Delgo is a no-go, and Home for the Holidays is so-so.

Discuss Article

This week at the movies, we've got an alien invasion (The Day the Earth Stood Still, starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly), forbidden CG love (Delgo, with voice work by Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt), and seasonal dysfunction (Nothing Like the Holidays, starring John Leguizamo and Debra Messing). What do the critics have to say?

Robert Wise's 1951 classic The Day the Earth Stood Still was a tense, intelligent Cold War allegory. The remake of the same name has subbed in the issue of global warming, but otherwise, critics say this update brings little freshness -- or excitement -- to the table. Keanu Reeves stars as Klaatu, an emissary from an advanced alien race that is sent to earth to determine if the human race can stop the environmental damage it has inflicted on the planet, since Klaatu's kind are considering a hostile takeover. It's up to an astrobiologist (Jennifer Connelly) and her stepson (Jaden Smith) to convince Klaatu not to wipe out all of humanity. The pundits say The Day the Earth Stood Still lacks the original's political smarts and air of menace; instead, it's more of a finger-wagging message flick with mediocre special effects. At 21 percent on the Tomatometer, this is not a very good Day.

Jennifer Connelly, Jaden Smith, and Keanu Reeves are involved in a different kind of auto bailout.

The sheer visual spectacle -- and intelligent plotting -- of such recent animated fare as WALL-E, Bolt, and Kung Fu Panda has raised the bar for the medium to such a level that some films that might have looked visionary a few years ago now look chintzy by comparison. Critics say Delgo is an example. In this CG fantasy tale, the title character (voiced by Freddie Prinze, Jr.) is a rebellious teenager who falls in love with Kyla (Jennifer Love Hewitt); trouble is, they're from two different peoples, and the romance is the catalyst for war. Will love triumph over all? The pundits say Delgo isn't terrible, just thoroughly mediocre, with videogame-quality visuals, slow-moving action, and an overplotted, undercooked story. At nine percent on the Tomatometer, Delgo is a no-go.

At least someone gave thumbs up to Delgo.

Another year, another comedy about a dysfunctional family coming together for the holidays. The critics say Nothing Like the Holidays is better than most, thanks to a strong cast, but it's still a pretty familiar affair. Holidays focuses on the Rodriguez clan, coming together for another yuletide celebration. However, things go south when matriarch Anna (Elizabeth Pena) announces she's splitting from her husband (Alfred Molina); meanwhile, some of the clan takes exception to the fact that eldest brother Mauricio's (John Leguizamo) wife (Debra Messing) doesn't seem all that interested in giving Anna grandchildren. The pundits say Nothing Like the Holidays features winning performances and a good deal of warmth, but the characters are thinly sketched and the material is pretty weather-beaten. It's currently at 56 percent on the Tomatometer.

Also opening this week in limited release:

  • Wendy and Lucy, starring Michelle Williams in a minimalist indie about a down-on-her-luck woman taking a road trip with her dog, is at 90 percent.

  • In the City of Sylvia, a nearly dialogue-free tale of a man searching for the title character in Strasboug, is at 88 percent.

  • The Spanish thriller Timecrimes, about a man who finds himself transported a few hours in the past and tries to make sense of a crime, is at 82 percent.

  • Gran Torino, directed by and starring Clint Eastwood as a bigoted curmudgeon who reluctantly befriends a neighborhood boy, is at 75 percent.

  • Doubt, starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman in the tale of a scandal that threatens the tight community of a Bronx Catholic school, is at 68 percent.

  • Steven Soderbergh's Che, starring Benicio Del Toro as the legendary revolutionary, is at 64 percent.

  • What Doesn't Kill You, starring Mark Ruffalo and Ethan Hawke as a pair of close friends and small-time hoods making their way on the gritty streets of Boston, is at 62 percent.

  • The Reader, starring Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes, about romance and guilt in post-World War II Germany, is at 59 percent.

  • Dark Streets, a neo-noir about a nightclub owner threatened by electrical blackouts and underworld figures, is at 10 percent.

I knew TDTESS was not going to be greeted with open arms by the critics, but it did worse than I thought it would. I'm still convinced this will clinch the top spot at the box office, though. No one stays at the top forever, Four Christmases.

Gran Torino looks pretty damn good and Clint looks top of his game. TDTESS looks like it can wait until cable.

The first time I saw Delgo, I thought it was a commercial for a fantasy based game, like Spyro or something ... unfortunately for my mind, it was a trailer for a movie ... Think I'll wait till that's on HBO or something.

I knew that the remake for TDTESS would focus more on effects and not the allegories because let's face it, this society is too soft and ready to go up and arms for any reasons and I think hollywood, no matter what you think of them, is afraid of that, especially in a big budget film that looks like a blockbuster. I'll indeed be taking my family members to it though, they love films like this.

What Doesn't Kill You looks interesting and so does Gran Torino ... can't go wrong with Clint Eastwood.

Never heard of "Delgo", and I'm still not interested. And "The Day the Earth Stood Still" will probaly suck, but I'd still rent it. And "Nothing Like the Holidays" looks cliched and boring and unfunny. So a lame week.

Seeing Delgo kills you. Literally. The trailer alone put me in a comma for 3 days.

As usual, they will compare TDTESS to the old film. But that was long ago, let the new generation of sci-fi fans enjoy this new movie.

I bought the original of TDTESS last week at five bucks, and I liked it. I'm don't have much expectations, except for Gort. I wanna see Gort!

Delgo seems meh.

I saw Reeves last night on Letterman. What a dud. I'll never understand why he keeps getting movie parts. Dude can't act his way out of a paper bag.

Forget the new version of "The Day The Earth Stood Still" and watch the origional. The best thing to do with the new version is ignore it completely, now on cable, on networtk TV, and later on DVD. Not every film deserves/need a remake. Again, ignore this film.

In this bound-to-be-lame remake of "The Day The Earth Stood Still", the issue is changed to "global warming"? Yawn, and gag me.

What the hell happened to Jennifer Connelly? She's being ripped harder than Reeves in most reviews I've read.

TDTESS is a waste of time. It is offensive in just about every aspect. What can you say about a film when the most hated character is the protagonists young child?

Many of the critics dislike the Green message: several reviews are quite political giving fanciful praise for Wise's nuclear theme - no more welcome then than now. In time the TDTESS remake will be seen to be a very good sci-fi.

Completely disagree Victoro. The original came out at a time when most Americans, fearing the communist Soviet Union, believed in a strong nuclear deterrent and believed we were responsible enough to use it. The message of the original challenged that belief as well as offering ground breaking visuals and an empathetic alien which really had not been seen before. This remake is not revolutionary at all, it's message is something many people already believe in, it's visuals are bland and it's alien lead is a wooden Keanu Reeves. The TDTESS remake won't be remembered at all.

I just love how we have engendered a whole generation of filmmakers who live in America and glorify figures from other, failed countries where the residents live mostly in totalitarianism and poverty.
