Because all of this looks blatantly unreal, and because the timing of the shock effects is so haphazard, Dead Alive isn't especially scary or repulsive. Nor is it very funny.
Here's a list of movies that the NY Times doesn't think is worth your time:
The Outlaw Josey Wales Carrie Duck Soup The General (1927) Rosemary's Baby The Fly (1986) Mad Max Death Race 2000 The Wolf Man (1941) RoboCop Planes, Trains and Automobiles Dawn of the Dead (1978) Ghostbusters The Breakfast Club Oh, God! Crimson Tide Patton The Godfather: Part II Alien The Empire Strikes Back Return of the Jedi One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Night of the Living Dead (1968) Once Upon a Time in America Jaws Rocky Rain Man Deliverance Blazing Saddles Witness Gremlins Romancing the Stone A Christmas Story The Exorcist The Thing (1982) The Natural Pee-Wee's Big Adventure The Manchurian Candidate (1962) Double Indemnity Strangers on a Train Lawrence of Arabia Yojimbo Rope The Ten Commandments (1956) Spartacus (1960) Goldfinger Bonnie and Clyde For a Few Dollars More The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Paths of Glory The Great Escape Lady and the Tramp Wild Strawberries Cat People (1942) Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)
The NY Times is a crap newspaper for anything except international news. Plus it's a huge pain in the ass to fold and refold and unfold and fold again then flip it upside down and then find the article then you see it's continued on page 17 then fold it over then find page 17 then fold it in half then go back to the beginning etc...
Mr. Holden,
Reading a critic like this leads me to one conclusion. If you don't understand ironic humor in a movie you should seriously rethink your career choices.

I actually agree with them on Rosemary's Baby, but that's it. That movie, to me, was really boring.
But man, that is a lot of good movies they put on their list of movies not worth our time. Some are even classics.
