To protect her son from the truth, Lizzie... DEAR FRANKIE is a heartwarming and often humorous tale of nine year-old Frankie and his mom, Lizzie, who have been on the move ever since he can remember. To protect her son from the truth, Lizzie has invented a story to satisfy Frankie's curiosity. She regularly writes Frankie a letter from his make-believe father who works aboard a ship traveling to exotic lands. However, Lizzie soon finds out his 'father's' ship will be arriving in a few days. Now, Lizzie must choose between telling Frankie the truth and hatching a desperate plan to find the perfect stranger to play the perfect father. Directed by SHONA AUERBACH, DEAR FRANKIE stars EMILY MORTIMER (Young Adam, Lovely and Amazing, Bright Young Things), GERARD BUTLER (Tomb Raider 2, Timeline, the forthcoming Phantom of the Opera), and JACK McELHONE (Young Adam) as Frankie. SHARON SMALL (About a Boy, Glasgow Kiss), MARY RIGGANS, JAYD JOHNSON and SEAN BROWN co-star. DEAR FRANKIE is produced by CAROLINE WOOD of Scorpio Films on behalf of Inside Track. The screenplay is by ANDREA GIBB. AUERBACH is also the director of photography. JENNIFER KERNKE is the production designer. ORAL NORRIE OTTEY is the editor and ALEX HEFFES the composer. • Dear Frankie
  • This touching and humorous movie has earned the raves of critics and won the hearts of audiences everywhere! To spare the feelings of her fatherless boy, Lizzie (Emily Mortimer -- Disney's THE KID) secretly authors letters from his "father" that detail seafaring adventures from around the world. But she cannot maintain this illusion forever. Torn between exposing the truth and protecting her son, Lizzie gets more than anyone bargained for when she hires a handsome stranger (Gerald Butler -- THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER: THE CRADLE OF LIFE) to play the role of a lifetime! Winner at both the Heartland Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival, this entertaining motion picture is sure to touch your heart.

The story as a whole may not completely hold up, but the characterizations created have depth and importance.

A film that will lose nothing on the small screen. Unless you need a big-screen dose of sentiment with a Scottish accent, wait for the DVD.

Auerbach has resurrected Butler's career, buried in the catacombs of a Parisian opera house, and gotten an unforgettable performance from Mortimer.

Unfortunately, Dear Frankie isn't content to just tug at our heartstrings. It has to yank at them, too.

It is a sweet, wonderfully acted cameo of a movie about the lengths to which a lioness will go to protect her cub.

The film is soft and sticky, but it deserves a (small) audience.

The heavy Scottish burr might keep younger audiences from fully following the story, but this heart-tugger is perfect for teenagers on up.

It poses itself as a feel-good movie. As a result, it ignores the weight its own crimes and therefore feels utterly clueless.

Dear Frankie isn't a good film, but it is a nice little movie...[about] what can happen when people become the conscious artists of their own lives.

Emotional responses are in keeping with the characterizations, and well-written dialogue... helps sustain a reality that the turns of plot constantly threaten.

A fraudulent yarn riddled with plot holes and improbabilities and topped by a cynical final twist that pulls the rug out from under the story.

The pat emotions contradict the lazily inconclusive life-goes-on ending, and the moral seems to be that kids just want to be lied to.
