Sylvester Stallone Has a Death Wish; Who Smells Franchise Reboot?
MGM wants sequels! Hooray!
by Jeff Giles | November 05, 2007
Discuss Article
Now that he's succeeded in resurrecting two of his own film franchises, Sylvester Stallone has apparently decided to pick up where another action hero left off.

Variety reports that Stallone is in talks to direct and star in a remake of 1974's Death Wish, the film that gave urban vigilantism a good name, propelled Charles Bronson to superstardom, and inspired a series of increasingly ridiculous sequels. According to the report, Michael Ferris and John Brancato are on tap to write the script.

The Death Wish films, which initially took their inspiration from the 1972 novel of the same name by Brian Garfield, were never particularly well-liked by critics, but for a brief period, they performed well at the box office. However, by the end of 1985's Death Wish 3 -- which saw Bronson offing a criminal with a mail-order rocket launcher -- the bloom was off the .475 Wildey Magnum, and by the time 1994's Death Wish 5: The Face of Death limped onto screens, it was widely assumed the franchise had come to its logical conclusion.

Not so, apparently. But hey, at least MGM is mounting this remake for artistically pure reasons. From the article:

"We are looking at our library to determine which potential franchise properties make the most sense for us to produce, and 'Death Wish' was clearly one of that jumped out," said MGM chief operating officer Rick Sands. "We hope to get a deal done with Sylvester Stallone to direct and star, and like the 'Rocky' and 'Rambo' films, we see this as another potential franchise for him."

"I AM THE LAW." It sounds good to me. I am a huge Stallone fan and Bronson fan. Looking forward to this. Cameo by Jeff Goldblum.

Um.... didn't Stallone basically do this already when he did Get Carter? I mean different story, but brutal revenge flick regardless.

I would rather see Stallone, face off against PREDATOR, in a Predator 3.

or at least give us RAMBO-5, cant wait for rambo-4. I just hope the studios dont cut out the gore we saw in the teaser.

There was also the laughable "Death Sentence" this year.

This is hilarious. They played the new Rambo trailer before American Gangster and the whole theatre was laughing giddily at it. It's just such a stupid guilty pleasure, isn't it?

Couldn't he do a sequel to "Over The Top" instead?

if you actually said the letters "o-m-g" instead of the words themselves, then I wish you death.

I don't know about you, but when I laugh I say "L-O-L!" instead of "Hahaha".

I like Stallone, but what he really needs to do is do something directed by someone else and something different overall right now.

This guy always just seems to find a way to sabotoge his momentum and in this case, doing three action sequels in a row just smells like a mistake.

I might like to see him star in a Death Wish remake, but he needs to get involved in something else (a la "Copland") first.

I love (read: 'am smacking head with bat over') the fact that the bigwigs at MGM are literally saying "Being completely, clinically, soulfully bankrupt of anything that passes as an original idea, we raped and pillaged all our old stuff--which wasn't spankin' new, anyway-- and found a relatively unmolested dead horse that we feel needs a good wuppin,' after which we'll put it in a dress and see if we can't whore a couple more mill out of it's festering carcass. We've been in discussion with Brett Ratner, who we feel will bring the new, complex vision of an 'Xmen 3' or 'Rush Hour 3' to this project, and combined with the young, authentic presence like Sly Stallone, we're *very* *excited* about this. Does anyone have a french-cut mini that would fit a bowl-legged holstein?"

...or something like that. I wasn't actually THERE, so...

I'd also rather see a remake of "Rhinestone" or "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!" before a new "Death Wish."

Did anyone see the episode of The Critic where they showed the clip from "Death Wish 9" and it was just Charles Bronson in a hospital bed saying, "I wish I was dead!" Granted it was funnier at the time it originally aired because Charles Bronson was still alive, but for all intents and purposes it's still kind of funny.

stallone, you need retirement because you are just way over the hill. When arnold is currently working as the governor, stallone should know that it is time to quit because he is little too old to be pretending as an action hero.
