In DECALOGUE I ("I am the Lord thy God; thou shalt have no other God but me"), a university professor teaches his young son that measurement can be applied to anything, and that such measurements can be calculated precisely using computers. Between their daily conversations about life, religion, and death, they entertain themselves by comparing actual results against computer-processed conclusions to random queries. However, they discover that the machine cannot predict--or protect against--everything. In DECALOGUE II ("Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain"), a man lies dying in a hospital while his wife privately stalks the doctor in the hopes of acquiring information about her husband's condition. She's pregnant with another man's child and will choose to either abort the fetus should her husband live, or give birth should he die. These first two episodes of Kieslowski's masterful series are heartbreaking, somber dramas with a deeply emotional undercurrent; the series was originally filmed for Polish television. [More]

Kieslowski's sure direction and the flawless performances make this compelling viewing.
This engaging and emotionally affecting depiction of the First Commandment is similar in spirit and intention to the parables of Jesus.
