In DECALOGUE III ("Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy"), a family man spends Christmas Eve with his lonely ex-lover instead of his wife and children. The pair drives through the cold Warsaw streets in search of her new boyfriend, illustrating the tangled affairs of the heart. In DECALOGUE IV ("Honor thy Father and thy Mother"), Anka, a teenager living with her father, finds a letter from her long-dead mother, learning that her father might not be the man she thought he was. Both episodes provide complex yet incisive looks at the taboos of love and family. Kieslowski, working with cowriter Krzysztof Piesiewicz, triggers an onslaught of philosophical and emotional questions without providing any easy answers. It is this insistence on remaining objective and open about his characters that makes THE DECALOGUE series a timeless, moving work of art; the series was originally filmed for Polish television.
