DECALOGUE IX ("Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife") concerns a philandering doctor suffering from impotency urges his wife to take a lover. Suspicious that she has taken his advice, he becomes consumed with jealousy. In DECALOGUE X ("Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods"), two estranged brothers, reunited by the death of their father, find themselves the sole benefactors of the most sought after, and valuable, stamp collection in Poland. The siblings, tormented by temptation, greed, and mistrust, become entwined in a flawed scheme in this intense story. With installments nine and ten Kieslowski concludes his masterpiece, originally made for Polish television, in yet two more stories of individuals who begin to lose control of their lives when temptation threatens to drown them. In keeping with his tradition of employing different cinematographers for each episode (although Piotr Sobocinski shot DECALOGUE III in addition to DECALOGUE IX), Kieslowski's closing commandments provide perfect closure to the emotionally challenging series. He is also able to draw effective performances from his revolving cast, resulting in brilliant studies of humanity at its most fragile. An enduring work of cinematic art, THE DECALOGUE continues to screen theatrically in retrospectives and festivals worldwide. [More]

Reviews for The Decalogue Vol. 5 - Parts IX & X
While the final installment of the cycle is the most lightly amusing, it is also the most disposable.
This sober drama reveals that all life must be respected and that no one deserves to be killed.
