SAVING RYAN'S PRIVATES is a one gag parody, with the contrast between the soaring score and the silly antics providing far more humor value than the endless synonyms for male genitalia. In BOY NEXT DOOR, a teenage brother and sister taunt each other as both lust after their hunky male neighbor. Directed by Carl Pfirman, the film is finely crafted, but offers limited laughs. JACKPOT, directed by Kris Kachikis, shows real wit in its attention to character, but the closing gag, the only one in the picture, is something of a disappointment. FAST FOOD is the best of the live action flicks as it takes pot shots at several Martin Scorsese films, taking aim in particuliar at GOODFELLAS and CASINO. Among the animated pics, LOUIE THE FLY, an examination of the downsides of life as a fly, is the shining star. DOGFISHING, also by Joe Byrnes, is equally wacky. HANGNAIL, LIVING WITH RIDALYN, and THE SID SIDESPLITTER SHOW all offer classic Warner Brothers-style violence as their primary source of humor. [More]
