Audience Reviews for Detective Story

A goofy dick and his ultra-polite neighbor stumble along through a mild Miike film. A funny and easy going outing without the usual preversion shocks. The end is great.

I am a huge fan of Miike's work, and I find everything he does extremely artistic, yet this film seemed more like a mainstream exercise with a simple story. this is one of his more tame movies - though there is some (somewhat) intense gore here and there - and though it's labeled under the genre of "horror", it's more of a comedy. the one true flaw of this movie, other than its lack of risk-taking, was that pretty much all the of the humor and comedic characters were annoying (especially this one chick - who's name slips my memory, but she works as Detective Raita's assistant - that I really wanted to get killed, but unfortunately (SPOILER ALERT) does not). The visuals, like in any Miike movie, are reasonably impressive, though not as surreal as his camerawork is in previous works; the color correction, though, is fantastic (so is the music - the music has what's probably the craziest saxophone playing i've heard since the last time i've listened to John Zorn's band Naked City).

really if you're a hardcore Miike fan, then you'll see it whether i recommend it or not, but for Miike fans who primarily enjoy previous works of his like Audition or Ichi the Killer, this will be nothing in comparison, but its worth checking out and its pretty entertaining (and has little of Miike's bizarre style - which is gross/weird things happening for supposedly no reason).
