A bit too familiar and occasionally melodramatic, Deuces Wild clicks nonetheless, thanks to a gritty screenplay and tight direction.

Leon (Stephen Dorff) leads the Deuces, a gang he formed to keep "junk" off his Sunset Park block after his youngest brother died of a drug overdose. However, his other brother, Bobby (Brad Renfro), is still alive and very hotheaded, and with their greaser gang mates, they keep themselves busy. When the rival gang, the Vipers, look to start a drug business in Deuces territory, Leon goes to Mob leader, Fritzy (Matt Dillon, playing a more senior thug than in his OUTSIDERS/RUMBLE FISH days). He asks for help, but in vain. While Leon worries about a gang war, Bobby chases after pretty, smart-mouthed Annie (Fairuza Balk), who just happens to be the sister of Jimmy Pockets (Balthazar Getty), a coked-up Viper. More trouble brews when Marco Vendetti (Norman Reedus), the drug dealer Leon holds responsible for his kid brother's death, is released from prison. When the big rumble comes, it forever changes the neighborhood in this story of loyalty, violence, and star-crossed love. [More]

Reviews for Deuces Wild
This is a film that manages to find greatness in the hue of its drastic iconography.
When you're watching a flick like this and you're expecting -- no, make that hoping -- someone's gonna bust out with a chorus of Maria, then you're in pretty bad shape.
The overkill of slow motion shots made it look more like Michael Jackson's Beat It video than a feature film.
It hasn't got a clue where it's going, or which movie it wants to copy most.
No cliche escapes the perfervid treatment of gang warfare called Deuces Wild.
If they broke out into elaborate choreography, singing and finger snapping it might have held my attention, but as it stands I kept looking for the last exit from Brooklyn.
The script from first-timers Paul Kimatian and Christopher Gambale requires Dillon to say corny things like: 'Bricks don't fall outta the sky in this neighborhood unless I'm throwin' 'em.' Tony Soprano, he ain't.
Deuces Wild treads heavily into Romeo and Juliet/West Side Story territory, where it plainly has no business going.
The movie is like Scorsese's Mean Streets redone by someone who ignored it in favor of old 'juvenile delinquent' paperbacks with titles like Leather Warriors and Switchblade Sexpot.
A stale drama about two rival white gangs who live across the street from each other.
At best, Deuces Wild is adequate direct-to-video fare. At worst, it's a horrifically bad theatrical release.
I accuse films of being generic and unoriginal on a regular basis, but rarely have I seen a movie so determined to check off every cliché on the list as Deuces Wild.
