Leon (Stephen Dorff) leads the Deuces, a gang he formed to keep "junk" off his Sunset Park block after his youngest brother died of a drug overdose. However, his other brother, Bobby (Brad Renfro), is still alive and very hotheaded, and with their greaser gang mates, they keep themselves busy. When the rival gang, the Vipers, look to start a drug business in Deuces territory, Leon goes to Mob leader, Fritzy (Matt Dillon, playing a more senior thug than in his OUTSIDERS/RUMBLE FISH days). He asks for help, but in vain. While Leon worries about a gang war, Bobby chases after pretty, smart-mouthed Annie (Fairuza Balk), who just happens to be the sister of Jimmy Pockets (Balthazar Getty), a coked-up Viper. More trouble brews when Marco Vendetti (Norman Reedus), the drug dealer Leon holds responsible for his kid brother's death, is released from prison. When the big rumble comes, it forever changes the neighborhood in this story of loyalty, violence, and star-crossed love. [More]

If Deuces Wild had been tweaked up a notch it would have become a camp adventure, one of those movies that's so bad it starts to become good. But it wasn't.

Deuces Wild is a beautifully textured movie with its heart in the right place. Yet it badly wants a mature sense of esthetic balance, restraint and decorum.

Maybe the filmmakers' affinity for fog machines clouded their thinking. No matter -- the mists of time are already swallowing this one.

A bit too familiar and occasionally melodramatic, Deuces Wild clicks nonetheless, thanks to a gritty screenplay and tight direction.

A stuffed turkey of weary cliches and regurgitated tough-guy subplots that rip off just about everything from West Side Story to Francis Coppola's archetypal S.E. Hinton adaptations of The Outsiders and Rumble Fish.

It's tough to tell which is in more abundant supply in this woefully hackneyed movie, directed by Scott Kalvert, about street gangs and turf wars in 1958 Brooklyn -- stale cliches, gratuitous violence, or empty machismo.

When you're watching a flick like this and you're expecting -- no, make that hoping -- someone's gonna bust out with a chorus of Maria, then you're in pretty bad shape.

Brainless, but enjoyably over-the-top, the retro gang melodrama, Deuces Wild represents fifties teen-gang machismo in a way that borders on rough-trade homo-eroticism.

It's clear why Deuces Wild, which was shot two years ago, has been gathering dust on MGM's shelf.

In its best moments, resembles a bad high school production of Grease, without benefit of song.

This hackneyed throwback to greasers and rumbles steals everything and nothing from the classic gang films that came before it.

This is a movie so insecure about its capacity to excite that it churns up not one but two flagrantly fake thunderstorms to underscore the action.

Contrived, awkward and filled with unintended laughs, the film shows signs that someone other than the director got into the editing room and tried to improve things by making the movie go faster.

Deuces Wild is an encyclopedia of cliches that shoplifts shamelessly from farewell-to-innocence movies like The Wanderers and A Bronx Tale without cribbing any of their intelligence.

It's an encyclopedia of cliches, with each stale plot twist easily predicted and relentlessly foreshadowed.

I can't remember the last time I saw an audience laugh so much during a movie, but there's only one problem…it's supposed to be a drama.
