There's a lot of talk of God and forgiveness and confession but the film is ultimately about responsibility and accountability...
Skilled direction, limpid cinematography and near-flawless acting.

There were moments and images in this film that held fantastic beauty in them. Actor Pal Sverre Hagen is magnificent as a murderer Jan Thomas who is released from prison and tries to cope with his life outside the prison bars. Things certainly are not easy for him and the future does not look good, but then against all odds he gets a job as an organist in church. These moments when Thomas is playing his organs are at times breathtaking. Especially the first time when he plays it becomes something fantastic to watch at.
Erik Poppe and cinematographer Johan Soderqvist captures truly magnificent images into their camera and i have to admit that Soderqvist's cinematography is quite possibly the strongest element in the whole film. There is also no denying of Poppe's talent as a director but the sceenplay by Harald Rosenlow-Eeg is so overwroght at times that it sinks the whole film. What begins as a interesting character study spirals out of control and ends up being a ridicilous mess that loses it's logic and spoonfeds it's themes in the ugliest possible way.
Overall Troubled Water is a mixed film, There are moments that make it worth to see and there are moments that just completely destroys it's potential to become even a good film. I admire Poppe as a director but he should be more careful with his choice of screenplay next time.
