The Devils Reviews

Quite astonishing, and virtually impossible to keep your eyes off! This one is all over the map! Phenomenal acting, at times over-the-top and hysterical, but always dead-serious. I cannot even imagine this film being made today.... The 70's were truly the greatest decade of obliterating the boundaries of art...!!! If you've never seen it, then you've never seen anything like it EVER...! Yes, there are exclamation points everywhere in this film...! NOT for the squeamish, prudish, or cerebrally stunted.... You've been forewarned...! One of my all-time favorites. :D

Not for every taste is putting it mildly. Ken Russell's wild take on the Aldous Huxley book of the same name, is considered one of the most important films of the early seventies and rightly so. Banned in 17 countries when released and maligned by critics everywhere, It remains a touchstone in the annuls of mad film making. And, if you haven't eaten much of anything that day, well worth seeing.

Let's get one thing out of the way, I adore Ken Russell. Something about his aesthetic is totally in sync with my world view. From WOMEN IN LOVE to WHORE, Russell always impresses. His rambunctious, over the top, more is more style should be ideal for THE DEVILS. Unfortunately, the film simply grows tiresome. You get what Russell is up to--group think, religious hysteria, sexual repression, etc... It takes about 30 minutes to get the point but the film goes on for another 90 piling on the atrocities and turning up the craziness.

THE DEVILS feels like a madcap Hammer Horror which is a huge compliment. THE DEVILS also looks amazing with a white brick set that is totally modern and nothing to do with 17th century France, and yet it never feels as obvious as the film.

Bravo Vanessa Redgrave for a no-holds-bar performance. She is spectacular and displays a restraint at moments that you wish the film had.

Censored, banned and notorious -- Ken Russell's fictionalized history is a flowing rant against hypocrisy, politics and Catholicism. All of the actors (particularly Vanessa Redgrave) are up for the challenge. Also important to note the brilliant work by the late Derek Jarman on set and production design. This is a stunning, dark and twisted experience one will not easily forget. Shame on Warner Bros for continuing to refuse this cinematic masterpiece a decent transfer to DVD / Blu-Ray. Best if viewed on the big screen. However, unedited versions are hard to find. Unforgettable. And, you are not human if some aspect of this film fails to disturb or provoke you. Brilliant depiction of power, greed and insanity.

Tot arsenalul ridicol al religiei intr-un singur film.

I'd only ever seen Ken Russell's embarrassing later work, so watching the Devils was an absolute revelation. It still looks like no other film: the stark modernist sets and costumes are incredibly impressive. So are Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave: he's surprisingly restrained and she's brilliantly put of control.

Yes, it is still kind of shocking, but also surprisingly relevant. Masterpiece? Yes, absolutely.

Russell's best film by a long shot. A visceral, potent visually stunning masterpiece.

Ken Russell's epic depiction of the controversial life of priest Urban Grandier makes u sit and watch the religious tyranny .

A scathingly brilliant examination of the struggle between church and the state, with a captivating central performance from Oliver Reed, and undeniably great direction from Ken Russell. Deeply provocative and unsettling, and certainly not for the faint of heart, this film will remain with you after the credits roll, burned into your memory.

Awesome film, a true masterpiece of cinema - wholly accurate, daring and memorable!

Not only Ken Russell's searing masterpiece but one of the most powerful and disturbing British films ever made.

I downloaded it and watched it. It is absolutely THE WORST MOVIE I EVER SAW. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Bizarre pseudo-true story of a conspiracy by an ambitious Catholic cardinal to bring the town of Loudun into the fold of an expanding ecclesiastic empire, and the downfall of the town's charismatic, lascivious, heroically reasonable protector, Father Grandier. This is a grand, fun story told with stagey, over the top sets and costumes, high melodrama, abrupt shifts in tone, and a good helping of weird humor and insanity. It kinda feels like a Terry Gilliam epic. Oliver Reed is fantastic as Grandier and steals the show even with the abundance of memorable personalities. It's significantly uneven in almost every aspect, but it's never not captivating and befuddling. +1 for Ken Russell

One of greatest films you may never see. We can only hope that Criterion gets their hands on this from WB for a blu-ray release.

I found this film insulting and extremely blasphemous. Especially in one scene where Christ is torn down then caressed by naked and apparently titillated naked nuns. It really depends on the viewer but I advise Christians that the film may be gratuitously offensive even though it is based on some 'real' events.

Film based on the true story of a 17th century French priest libertine lifestyle made him an enemy of Cardinal Richelieu and was hence accused of being the devil's son. A controversial, eccentric and stylish vision of decadence with nightmarish visuals, extravagant sets and costumes and a rising energy that constantly follows the film, which is one of Ken Russell's most defining works.
