Former child star Dickie Roberts... In the reverse rags-to-riches story of DICKIE ROBERTS: FORMER CHILD STAR, writer/actor David Spade's string of infectious laughs turn into waves of compassion. Former child star Dickie Roberts (Spade) has wound up working as a valet, dodging insults and lamely making attempts to regain his former glory with the help of his equally down-and-out agent, Sidney Wernick (Jon Lovitz). His buddy, the real-life recovering child star Leif Garrett, tells Dickie about a role in a Rob Reiner film that could revive Dickie's acting career. But Reiner is not convinced Dickie, whose mother and father left him at an early age, knows enough about normal life to nail the role. Dickie shows his commitment to the craft by moving in with a hired surrogate family to replicate the idea of childhood, but does not win points with his new Mom (Mary McCormack) when he introduces her kids to repugnant table manners, irreverent behavior, and foul language. As he absorbs the true meaning of tenderness and family, Dickie finally proves that he has something to offer each one of them. Spade and executive producer Adam Sandler find classic comedy in this retro theme, which includes appearances from former child stars like Danny Bonaduce (Danny in THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY) and Barry Williams (Greg from THE BRADY BUNCH). As with JOE DIRT (2001), Spade also shows a tender side, which is surprising coming from the king of deadpan one-liners and brutal sarcasm. [More]

Reviews for Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star
An amiable-enough Spade vehicle that lacks that certain something, but still manages to generate its fair share of giggles.
Child is father to the man in this often funny, but just as often ham-fisted, untrue Hollywood story.
This movie is almost as much of a surprise as it is to wake up on Christmas morning to find just what you want under the tree.
This was a hysterical, shocking, and depressing movie that will have you feeling that you are old.
Too hit-and-miss to score consistently, the film still offers plenty of strong laughs, along with a knowing take on celebrities and their foibles.
Dickie Roberts is a lot funnier than it has any right to be... considering it’s a David Spade comedy and counts Adam Sandler among its executive producers.
Anyone who grew up watching television or revels in every episode of E! True Hollywood Story (and you know who you are) should enjoy this movie.
While most of the physical comedy is lazy and predictable...what surrounds it is a surprisingly charming diversion with a rather clever premise.
Spade's version of 'The Wedding Singer'--a movie that might actually appeal to people who've previously found its star insufferable...a good-natured bit of family fluff.
Worth the price of admission just to see the opening E! True Hollywood Story about Dickie, and the closing credits which feature every former child star from the past 20 years.
Spade proves that it’s plenty easy to mock former child actors, but it’s actually enterprising to directly involve them in the plot.
Every moment that's meant to be touching is laughable, but the moments when we're supposed to be laughing are just funny enough to carry the movie along.
This sleek and sunny comedy is an all-too-rare example of smart and inventive Hollywood filmmaking.
At least Dickie Roberts is a good dozen jokes apart from being a one-joke movie. And it’s a good thing Spade penned the premise as fiction before Fox tried to pass it off as a reality show.
It's a standard joke in screwy teen comedies, but for some reason it seems kind of fresh here.
Dickie Roberts, while certainly not a good movie, is a perfectly affable summer comedy, filled with nearly nonstop physical comedy and an impressive sprinkling of has-been celebrity cameos.
If the filmmakers had resisted the urge to make it so adorable and meaningful, this could have been a terrific comedy.
