Former child star Dickie Roberts... In the reverse rags-to-riches story of DICKIE ROBERTS: FORMER CHILD STAR, writer/actor David Spade's string of infectious laughs turn into waves of compassion. Former child star Dickie Roberts (Spade) has wound up working as a valet, dodging insults and lamely making attempts to regain his former glory with the help of his equally down-and-out agent, Sidney Wernick (Jon Lovitz). His buddy, the real-life recovering child star Leif Garrett, tells Dickie about a role in a Rob Reiner film that could revive Dickie's acting career. But Reiner is not convinced Dickie, whose mother and father left him at an early age, knows enough about normal life to nail the role. Dickie shows his commitment to the craft by moving in with a hired surrogate family to replicate the idea of childhood, but does not win points with his new Mom (Mary McCormack) when he introduces her kids to repugnant table manners, irreverent behavior, and foul language. As he absorbs the true meaning of tenderness and family, Dickie finally proves that he has something to offer each one of them. Spade and executive producer Adam Sandler find classic comedy in this retro theme, which includes appearances from former child stars like Danny Bonaduce (Danny in THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY) and Barry Williams (Greg from THE BRADY BUNCH). As with JOE DIRT (2001), Spade also shows a tender side, which is surprising coming from the king of deadpan one-liners and brutal sarcasm. [More]

  • Dickie Roberts is a 35-year old former child star. Now an out-of-work actor turned parking valet, Dickie is desperate to audition for a great role that could revitalize his career, but the part requires him to play a "normal" guy. Problem is, Dickie is anything but normal. He decides to hire a family to adopt him so he can relive his childhood and, in essence, grow up from scratch.

Even Dick Van Patten make an appearance. Who knew "Eight is Enough" referred to the number of authentic hairs on Dick's head?

Has a surprising amount of heart, but heart doesn’t replace good gags.

The film has its moments, particularly when in satire mode. It's just too bad that not as much fun and imagination went into crafting and then fleshing out the main, predictable plot.

What starts off as a biting comedy turns out to have a soft, squishy middle.

Every moment that's meant to be touching is laughable, but the moments when we're supposed to be laughing are just funny enough to carry the movie along.

While most of the physical comedy is lazy and predictable...what surrounds it is a surprisingly charming diversion with a rather clever premise.

...the shoddy execution of Dickie Roberts is about a dozen of whoopie cushions inferior to the insightful other sources that knew how to skew the outrageousness of this subject matter.

Too hit-and-miss to score consistently, the film still offers plenty of strong laughs, along with a knowing take on celebrities and their foibles.

Worth the price of admission just to see the opening E! True Hollywood Story about Dickie, and the closing credits which feature every former child star from the past 20 years.

Only the latest in a long line of forgettable, unfunny "comedies" in which we're supposed to care about some intrinsically unlikable slob.

The movie may appeal to fans of Spade's trademark smug and blandly disaffected comic style. And his delivery occasionally fits the material. But too many segments are flat and schlocky.

This film is not the worst Spade has ever made. Remember Joe Dirt? Unfortunately, Dickie Roberts is just another forgettable film in his desperately-seeking -a-feature -film-career oeuvre.

Dickie Roberts, while certainly not a good movie, is a perfectly affable summer comedy, filled with nearly nonstop physical comedy and an impressive sprinkling of has-been celebrity cameos.

A slightly better-than-average David Spade summer comedy that imparts its fair share of laughs but bogs down after a solid start and never makes anything special out of its premise.

It's a standard joke in screwy teen comedies, but for some reason it seems kind of fresh here.

Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star is alert fun as long as it stays on Hollywood and Vine ... once Dickie is transplanted to suburbia, his movie becomes just another bland, heartfelt family-oriented comedy.
