As much as I always enjoyed Pierce Brosnan's performances, he just looked so worn out, bored, or emotionally absent in this film that the best thing in it was Toby Stephens' performance as Gustave Graves. If you play the swordfight sequence in slow motion, Toby looks absolutely fierce and Pierce looks very, very afraid although at the end (of course - this has to be) James Bond "wins". Really over the top gadgetry and not really appealing "sexy" Bond girls - not to mention the trashy Madonna appearance. I'm glad Pierce did not try to make another Bond film. For inspiring spy capers - check out "Reilly, Ace of Spies". I read somewhere the Ian Fleming based Bond in part on Sidney Reilly.
