To say that de Palma's "Dionysus" "seems to be a collection black and white home movies using hand held cameras" is to completely miss the point of the film. De Palma's film provides a fantastic record of the Performance Group's revolutionary play "Dionysus in 69," a work that reinterpreted Euripides's "Bacchae" using the paradigms of Environmental and Ritual Theatre. Anyone interested in the conext of this interesting film ought to check our Richard Schechner and the Performance Group's script/analysis of the piece, also titled "Dionysus in 69."
Point is, you can't watch this film without understanding, or even just mentioning, what de Palma is filming, namely, a significant event in theatre history. We're fortunate to have his record.
