A quietly engaging experience that skips down memory lane with bona fide sincerity.

In July 1969, the eyes of the world were on the Apollo 11 moon landing--but the world would have watched blank television screens if not for the hard work of a group of Australians manning the Parkes Radio Telescope, one of the largest dishes in the world. In THE DISH, a dramatization of the events surrounding the telecast or the space mission, Cliff Buxton (Sam Neill) and Al Burnett (Patrick Warburton) try to hold their crew together through calamities and crises ranging from dangerously high winds to a sudden power failure that cuts off contact with the distant astronauts, forcing the team to impersonate Neil Armstrong for the benefit of the visiting American ambassador. While the crew frantically prepares for the big moment, relaying the footage to televisions across the world, the people of Parkes celebrate their part in this momentous historical event. One of the most critically and commercially successful films ever to come out of Australia, THE DISH is a rousing, feel-good movie that succeeds both because of its perfectly formed characters and because of a heartwarming tone that illustrates that working for a common goal is the highest calling in life. Reviews for The Dish
An uproariously funny lark that first beguiles us with its comedy but leaves us in a warm glow of admiration and inspiration.
One would be surprised to find such an enjoyably human story from what appears to be a cold, scientific instrument.
All these years later, the sight of a man walking on the surface of the moon has lost none of its power.
Both an entertaining, instructive jaunt down memory lane and also, for the younger generation, a most palatable lesson in modern history.
The Dish also does a nice job of evoking what 1969 was like for people who didn't live in San Francisco, Paris or even Melbourne, Australia.
Makes you admire the Australian ability to make a comedy that's sincere rather than crass.
The Dish is an entertaining, funny, and strong lesson in collaborative initiative, community spirit, and a rousing sense of humor. What a lovely adventure!
For many moviegoers, that feel-good spirit is going to be hard to resist.
A feel-good movie that re-creates a time and place with gentle humor and a reminder that the Aussies have the right stuff, too.
Works well as a metaphor for a more innocent time and captures a sensation of awe that feels real.
So entertaining that it will leave all but the most cynical of viewers giddy with delight and filled with the urge to run out and tell others about it.
Images of the revolving and tilting dish are sufficient in themselves and do more than make up for the musical goosing on the soundtrack.
A graceful reminder of the astronauts' magnificent feat and of our own capacity for wonder.
A warmly human story marked by humor, drama, a little romance and an ending that's preordained (though crises arise), yet also moving.
