This ham-fisted Apartheid allegory involving beleaguered insectoid space aliens herded into the eponymous South African ghetto wins several points because it craftily hybridizes much that was cool about '80s sci-fi.

If sensitive, intelligent, and cat food craving creatures whose heads look like transplants from the 'Star Wars' cantina scene is by itself not enough to pique your interest to see 'District 9,' then wherefore art thou?

The backstory beats the hell out of the present-tense plot, a routine affair in which a well-meaning doofus working for the Man is infected with a virus, starts turning into an alien himself, and falls in with the oppressed creatures.
