Next Video Game Movie: "Diablo"
by Scott Weinberg | June 18, 2007
Discuss Article
Now here's a game I know a little something about!

I never played much "DOA: Dead or Alive," "Mortal Kombat," or "Resident Evil" (well, maybe a little) but Blizzard's "Diablo" is a game I've spent several happy hours with. It's just a basic 'hack and slash your way through a dungeon while collecting gold / weapons and leveling up your experience points" game, but a whole lot of fun.

Anyway, according to the official Legendary Pictures website, they're about to move forward with a movie version of Diablo. No word on who'll be writing, directing, or starring in the movie, but apparently the thing's moving forward so we should be hearing something soon.

And since Legendary Pictures is the company that gave you "300," hopefully the "Diablo" movie will be extra crazy.

Sounds cool. Never played the game myself, but know a lot of hardcore fans of it. Hell, if they manage to make Diablo as evil looking as he is on the cover, it should be fun.

Im very interested in this...i lost like 2 yrs to that game, lol. Hopefully Blizzard will have enough say in this to make it not suck too badly. I wonder which Diablo game it will be based around. Hope its around D2 so we can see hell and the river of flame:)

KEEP UWE BOLL AWAY FROM THIS LICENSE!!!

I played this game religiously in high school (was it that long ago??). It was great.

But I have to say this, just as I always do. Video game movies don't work because what makes them interesting (being able to control them) is removed. It's like taking a step backwards.

That rotting horse has now been beaten once again.

If Uwe Boll directs and if it is PG-13 (I've heard the Diablo games were pretty gory) then I will lose all faith in this movie.

which, basically, makes me a hypocrite.

favorite game!
diablo 1 and 2 were my favorite games back then! I hope it falls into the right hands... whatever happend to talks about a warcraft movie?
anyway I don't think they could ever do a movie good enough to please every fan...the game was just going thru dungeons and killing nastier monsters as you went down...I guess a movie about chapter 5 from diablo 2 expantion (the barbarians fighting demons) would make more sense...

This movie could be epic, as long as they included the secret cow level. Mooo

I really enjoyed Diablo 2.
Maybe the movie will be based on one of the Diablo books.

Wasn't Legendary Pictures also tapped to do a Warcraft movie? I haven't heard anything about that since it was originally announced. At any rate, I think Diablo could make for a decent enough movie. It's got an interesting story, but one that's simple enough to mash down into a 2 hour package.

Actually Christophe Gans is an outstanding director who just had a bit of a stumble with Silent Hill. Visually, FH was pretty cool, but the story was lacking and for that we have to blame the writer. To see Gans at his best, check out Brotherhood of the Wolf.

A Diablo movie could be cool.

Just keep Uwe Boll away from this movie and make a serious effort on it. Too many Sci-Fi Fantasy movies become cornball movies with childish humor. Please Acknowledge the fact that Diablo fans aren't 14 years old anymore. Lets get back to some serious Swords and Sorcery type movies again. I miss movies like Conan and the original Beastmaster.

Diablo II was downright disturbing. It was the first game that made me sit back from my computer and think--that's just not right.
I was playing a necromancer (raising the corpses of the dead to fight for me) while tearing through legions of demons over the half-eaten bodies of dead harem girls.
Ugh...
But yeah, Uwe Boll could make this a PG-13 movie with some slap-stick comedy thrown in.
