Now that his ex-wife Susan (Teri Polo) divorced him, his son Danny (Matt O'Leary) is constantly at the police station for one problem or another. So when Susan marries charming Rick (Vince Vaughn), Frank thinks he will provide the financial stability that Danny needs to clean up his act. Then, a mysterious Ray (Steve Buscemi) rolls into town and claims to be an old friend of Rick's. But Rick tells a different story, making Frank wary of them both. When Ray suddenly disappears, Danny claims that he witnessed Rick murder him. Susan thinks it's just another one of Danny's lies, but Frank isn't so sure. He investigates Rick's background and finds that Rick isn't at all what he appears to be. Director Harold Becker (SEA OF LOVE) delivers thrills and melodrama and the film is like a dreaming dog--quietly still, punctured by jolts of movement. Vaughn is subtly menacing and Travolta is as affable as a retriever, but it's Buscemi who really lights up the screen with a sleazy wariness that is hilarious. [More]

Reviews for Domestic Disturbance
Domestic Disturbance is essentially a B-movie chiller with A-list casting, and that works against it.
The movie slogan is, 'He will do anything to protect his family.' And yet -- except for the hand-to-hand combat at the end -- Travolta is not hugely proactive, spending most of the time wrestling with whether or not he believes Danny.
Since it purports to be a thriller, well, let's just say the edge of your seat doesn't exactly get a workout.
The physical details are so unlikely they seem contrived even in a thriller.
While there's nothing groundbreaking about this old-school family suspenser, director Harold Becker (City Hall) works a series of can't-miss elements with sufficient skill to make it succeed on its own humble terms.
Replacing suspense with formula, Domestic Disturbance doesn't make nearly the ripple it could have made.
What you see is what you get, and what you get is a well-acted, exciting suspense thriller that ties the knot -- er, noose, slowly until its choke-hold climax.
Call it what you will, but just avoid calling it out loud while standing at your local theater box office.
A small and fuzzy blip in an already very bad film year, as nondescript and uninvolving as its title.
A simple, serviceable, reasonably entertaining thriller, and nothing more.
Solid haircut, solid movie -- or so goes my exclusive Travolta Unified Cinematic Hair Theory ... My theory stands.
The acting is surprising good and the feeling is you’re gonna get your money’s worth. That feeling doesn’t last long. The film simply runs out of ideas and comes to a cliche-ridden screeching halt.
Travolta rises above the material by being believable and sincere, proving he still can command a scene.
Goes through the motions, slowly at first, and then with a speed that would seem remarkable if you cared a whit what was going on.
Since we know from the outset that Rick is a cold-blooded murderer and Frank would walk through fire for his boy, there's not much suspense as to how things will turn out.
It's all indifferently acted, sloppily directed and edited, and utterly ridiculous.
