Movie Info

George Lester (Jerry Lewis) is a daydreamer who tries the patience of his wife Pamela (Jacqueline Pearce) in this uneven comedy venture. Terry-Thomas plays an ambitious promoter who oils the mind of the ever-dreaming George, always searching for a way to capitalize on his latest scheme. Pamela puts up with her husband to the point of exasperation, before she realizes his unique personality is the reason she fell in love with him in the first place. Bernard Cribbins and Patricia Routledge also add their comedic touches to this British film.more

Dreary comedy, where the laughs are not forthcoming.

Ozus' World Movie Reviews

A tame mix of jokes that haven't stood up over the years and misunderstandings that likely weren't all that funny to begin with.

Pretty funny Lewis vehicle. More controlled than most.

Audience Reviews for Don't Raise the Bridge, Lower the River

½

Briskly paced British film, not hilarious, some may not be amused either. Jerry Lewis is portrayed from the beginning as a confidence man, a quick sell artist. He can't understand why his British wife wants a divorce.

George Lester (Jerry Lewis) is an American living in Britain. His passion is get-rich-quick schemes, and they have caused financial and personal grief for him and his wife, Pamela, (Jacqueline Pearce) who is considering divorce if he continues with them.

The film itself is well done and the actress is great to look at as she is the nearly divorced wife of Jerry. So I found her a sweet distraction from the movie as a whole and Jerry's suave, black tie character.

But the film loses me on credibility when Jerry schemes to turn a country mansion of his wealty wife into a chinese discoteque.

The highlight is watching British comic Terry Thomas in the film working with Jerry on their next criminal act. Thomas was well known to the American public by this time.

Embarrassing low point for Lewis, with virtually no laughs, but I will say Jacqueline Pearce is a good-lookin' woman.
