Down River is an intelligent work with moments of poignancy and emotional resonance by a talented filmmaker.
Ratner's script depicts each woman in distinct strokes, creating individual characters whose unique problems dovetail into one life lesson.
Four stories are woven seamlessly together, and the script finds its teeth in scenes between Markinson and Spence.
Ratner, making inspired use of the Vancouver cityscape, has crafted a film of considerable beauty with great dialogue that underscores the wisdom of giving your head a shake and making the most of your life while you can.
The actors are terrific, especially Spence and relative newcomer Rennison.
The script teeters on the edge of sentimentality, and the ending is a little pat, but for the most part Down River wears its emotions honestly on its sleeve.
