Richard Gere plays Sullivan "Sully" Travis (better known as Dr. T), a man whose good looks and overflowing charm have made him the most popular gynecologist in all of Texas. Things begin to go wrong for Dr. T when his beautiful wife, Kate (Farrah Fawcett), begins to lose her sanity. He sends her to a mental hospital with the hopes of a full recovery, but her regression into childhood seems to be permanent. Adding to the mass confusion is an unexpected visit from his alcoholic sister-in-law, Peggy (Laura Dern), who brings along her three children, as well as the constant battles between Dr. T's two daughters: the soon-to-be-married Dee Dee (Kate Hudson) and the jealous Connie (Tara Reid). Upon meeting his country club's new assistant golf pro, Bree (Helen Hunt), Dr. T finally feels like he's met his match--a beautiful, independent woman who has no desire to be swept off her feet. Trying to juggle the pressures of his personal and professional life, Dr. T's recent problems culminate on Dee Dee's rain-soaked wedding day. Working again with screenwriter Anne Rapp, Altman closes his sprawling comedy with an utterly outrageous yet genuinely optimistic finale. [More]

The slightly anachronistic absurdity of the conceit -- the travails of a lone gentleman in a world of ladies -- gives the actors room to do some wonderful work.

For those who don't mind being whipsawed between Rapp's characters and Altman's caricatures, there is much to enjoy in Dr. T.

Dr. T and the Women may put off people who only look for action and a plot-by-numbers storyline, but should be seen by people who crave adventurous filmmaking.

A flirting, funny, deliciously adult comedy.

It may aggravate as many moviegoers as it pleases, but it's likely to live in memory longer than most of the well-behaved fare seen in recent months.

It was a sweet film with some bizarre touches in its satire of the bourgeois.

Ultimately, Dr. T is the cinematic equivalent of shooting well-dressed turkeys in a barrel.

Not only a thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying piece of work, but one of the better, more thought-provoking movies [Altman] has made.

This relaxed drama rambles in true Altman fashion and boasts some delightful performances.

A shrewd, sideways glance at the incredibly dense (and darn proud of it) male of the species.

Lighter and less compelling than Altman's best efforts, the new one produces a low-level, but still enjoyable, buzz.

[Altman] and Gere, surrounded by various blondes in extremis, mostly keep it entertainingly rambunctious.

Moves at hurricane speed for most of its 122-minute running time, but Gere deliberately underplays his character, providing the calm center that the story needs.
