At 135 minutes, this overly long exercise in abstraction sinks under the weight of its Moby Dick-sized self-importance.

Consensus: Some of the images are striking, if confusing, but the film is unbearably slow and tedious.

Reviews for Drawing Restraint 9
Surprisingly linear and entrancing like a comfy drug haze... but how does one emotionally or intellectually engage with cinema that spends all its energy just being unique?
As visually stunning as it is, DR9 is also more than two hours and contains, at best, 10 lines of dialogue, an ear-piercing Bjork score and no discernible plot.
Drawing Restraint 9 lacks that sense of visiting an altogether fresh, personal universe that provided much of the fascination of the Cremasters.
Not since the collaborations of Godfrey Reggio and Philip Glass (Koyaanisqatsi), have music and visuals been so satisfyingly combined.
It's full of arcane symbolism and alarming imagery and lots of smart, goofy-sounding Bjork music.
Sitting through the film's tedious unfolding can be an interesting mental exercise.
Drawing Restraint 9 is Barney again creating something tenaciously abstract, but this time the result is more serene and approachable.
The experience is at times taxing, but the imagery ... is undeniably arresting and sticky.
Barney and Björk certainly deserve each other; theirs is a match made purgatorial.
However enigmatic this all might be, there is no denying that Barney has assembled some rivetingly beautiful images.
Primarily for those who fancy New Age-ish Viking howling and admirers of multi-media experimentalist Matthew Barney.
