The only bad guy around here is you! (hides in corner). I personally found it one of the best action flicks of the summer (yes summer, I am from the UK and it came out 2 weeks ago).
The Raid was good, but the violence in the movie goes from "wow" to "bludgeoning you over the head" after about a half hour. I fell asleep during the climatic 15 minute fight scene. I wole up and the fight was still going. The twist with the two brothers (the "redemption" plot) was weak.
With 'Dredd' I was invested the whole way through. Besides, "The Raid" was limited release. Only action movie buffs cared to see it. Dredd is wide release, so hopefully it can do some damage at the box office so we can get a sequel.
Have you read the Comic on which this is based. Which also means this is not a re-make or a ripoff of The Raid. This movie is about getting done right. BTW, I have seen this movie.
who the hell comes to see Dredd for the narrative or story? I went and saw it to witness bad guys getting annihilated in the dozens with some of the most badass one liners.
So you're another of those eggheads who goes into every single movie, regardless of whatever genre it may be, expecting some grandiose character study, something with outrageously political undertones, or social satire. Then you end up disappointed when it turns not all movies are going to be like that.
I normally don't comment on this type of stuff, but I found it interesting that this film was basically being recommended universally by critics until the release of all the 'top critics' reviews today. Now maybe the film isn't very good-I have yet to see it-but it is interesting that there's such a huge split between those considered to be the higher tier-if that's what top critic is supposed to mean-critics and the rest of the bunch. Is it because they are going into it with a preconceived notion that the film is going to be poor? Not criticizing, but truly asking if this may be the case, since there is such a wide split in particular among the reviewers on this film.
Ultimately, it comes down to taste, something in which I am convinced that this "reviewer" has none of, as well as, any real understanding of film; a deduction I came to while reading his past reviews on this site. Why do you think they rarely let him review the larger films, most of what they place him on are second tier titles? He's a throw-away.
Smith's website uses the quote:
?There?s little point in writing if you can?t annoy somebody.?- Kingsley Amis
So essentially, good old Kyle is always writing his negative reviews just to annoy us, rather than actually critique movies. Thus, the drop in Dredd ratings from d#$C's like him.
Hey Kyle, I'm sure that Amis would have also told you that annoying someone is not the only thing writing should do. It says a lot that you get paid to do so...by the NY Post no less. Get a life.
