Critic Review - This is London

Refn ... is an avid fan of American thrillers and is clearly familiar with most of its clichs. Every one is displayed, in one sequence or another, during the film.

People such as yourself do nothing more then highlight your own bad taste by stating your underdeveloped opinions... Thanx for making it easier for the rest of us to know that looking at your reviews are a pointless waste of our time. If your incapable of seeing the blatant references for what they are(a brilliant mingling of familiar genre pastiche with a very distinct spin all his own), and you just assume Refn was just ripping off other director's style then you my friend are as dense as my very dense penis.

@Randall A I agreed with everything you said and thought it was great, but then I read that last sentence. Then I knew it was fantastic.

@Randall A. I'll see your dense penis and raise you by your even denser (or should I say tighter) a-hole. Nothing is more irritating that some fanboy who's offended that somebody doesn't like their favorite movie.

Unless you were deeply involved in the production of Drive (which I'm sure you weren't), what's the criticism to you? It's like a Harry Potter geek that cries if you say it sucked compared to LOTR.

Don't be one of those nerds.

Yeah, man, leaving comments on a review, why ever do that? And the internet... why is that a thing?

The movie is boring, lacks dialogue, and the 'driver' doesn't have any motive to justify his life risking actions.

The main character shows no personality at all. The movie attempts to sell his blank facial expressions, and limited dialogue as some sort of mystery man. However, this mystery has no clues, nor answers, and is a huge failure. The only mystery to me is how a sub par movie has overwhelming positive review, and why I spent 10 dollars on a ticket.

The main character risks his life on several occasions for a woman he rarely talked to. A 10 second lustful stare down is suppose to be the motivation of the characters multiple life risking actions.

The ending; well, there is no ending! This isn't surprising, based on the fact the bland main character doesn't have any background, personality, motive, or facial expressions. To sum it up; there is no ending because there is no movie. There is no movie, because there is no central theme, or believable motivation.

The fact this movie has overwhelming positive reviews shows the bar has been lowered for the new era of cinematography; or, that critics get a some sort of monetary incentive to sell extra tickets.

Face facts, many people often see a movie based on reviews. There are 10's of millions to be made or lost, depending on critics reviews. When you see a bad movie get overwhelmingly positive reviews; it's safe to assume the movie invested in buying critics.

Don't worry Chris... I just got of the phone with Refn and he said that for the director's cut, he'd add more explosions, double crosses and an hour's worth of exposition on what Driver's life was like when he was a child. Just for you, buddy!

There's a vast difference between a cliche and a trope..if used well, a trope can enhance a movie rather than make it seem trite. You as a reviewer obviously don't know the difference.

we have a winner.
What is everybody getting upset for anyways? We're bound to get a few negative reviews by lesser critics. For God sakes, even movies like Lawrence of Arabia, Schindler's List, and Taxi Driver don't have perfect ratings because of these lesser critics. A lot of people say they ruin the perfect scores on purpose. Sometimes, maybe. Most of the time, it's because of what this guys said. They're guys who are trying to get into the big leagues of critics by being "strict" or "harsh" on good movies by trying to find the worst no matter at what cost.
I don't know if any of you guys have even seen Drive yet. If so, then good for you. If not, wait until you actually see it. ;) I haven't seen it and this review does nothing when it comes to changing how I feel about wanting to see it. =]

Forgot to mention the most important part (oops)
This guy obviously tried to find bad in this movie so he resorted to the worst case scenario of calling things cliche, when all of the other reviews so far are saying this movie is exciting and fresh.

Actually from his write up, having seen it myself, he was overly generous in his analysis. There is virtually no dialogue in this film. When he says "Gosling gazes into the eyes of Britain's Carey Mulligan like a lovelorn sheepdog"....he's not just being critical....he is LITERALLY summarizing the whole movie. Because aside from a few murders and two car sequences that is pretty much it....it's a whole lot of not-talking and disconcerting stares. And I went into this expecting to see a pretty decent action, getaway type flick. I'll admit I didn't think Ryan Gosling was that great of an actor, but it's movies like this that completely reinforce that opinion.

@Ian K Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Cliches ARE tropes, by definition, or at least a subset. But tropes are not necessarily cliches, as long as they are used wisely or creatively. Put away your cloak of superiority and retake freshman lit.
