Agreed! Warrior seems to be the "forgotten" movie of 2011... It was amazing though!

How the heck did Chloe Moretz not get a nomination for best young actor/actress?

"finest achievements in 2010 filmmaking" --> should be 2011
You have 2 of each of the following: best art direction, best costume design, best action movie and best young actor/actress.

I'll give my shot, letting my betting instincts fill in the gaps for the films I haven't seen yet:
Picture - Tree of Life/Hugo (tie)
Actor - George Clooney
Actress - Viola Davis
Supp. Actor - Andy Serkis (three way tie for Brooks, Nolte, and Plummer in films I haven't seen)
Supp. Actress - Jessica Chastain (for "Tree of Life"!!!)
Director - Scuse Me? What are we talking over hee. Give the man the trophy already!
Adapt Screenplay - Hugo
Orig Screenplay - The Artist
Art Direct - Hugo/Tree of Life (tie)
Costume - The Artist
Editing - Drive
Score - Drive/Dragon Tattoo (toss up)
Song - "Me Party", Muppets (or Man or Muppet if you must...)
Sound - Hugo
Visual Effects - Rise/Apes (but I really want to give another Hugo/Tree tie)
Animated - Tintin (X)
Foreign - Skin I Live In
Doc - Cave of Forgotten Dreams
Action - Hanna/Rise of Apes (tie) (still haven't seen Drive, but not being an action film is what got it into some trouble)
Comedy - Hobo with a Shotgun...uh, I mean, Horrible Bosses
Young Actor - Asa Butterfield/Saoirse Ronan

Just to be a dick about it, I noticed an article by Salon's Andrew O'Hehir where he attempts to examine the deflated cinema economy this year. He has some very familiar sounding things to say about it, so I'll quote him in surrogate: "It feels as if the film industry has abruptly arrived at a dysfunctional apartheid system: The masses in the multiplex heartland are fed a steady diet of prepackaged sequels and franchises (which they enjoy less and less), while bicoastal elite audiences face a relentless holiday-season barrage of prestige films that lose money but win awards." "It?s also not like another hit or two will do anything to address the deep-seated structural problems in the American film industry. It?s been years since Hollywood abandoned its attempt to please all the people all the time in favor of a Faustian bargain with social science, slicing and dicing its audience into ever-narrower categories. This year, that model went sour in a big way, and except for a handful of big hits, Hollywood couldn?t please anybody."

Bigbrother .

Agree with most of your choices with the exception of the movie we have proven we can't speak about civilly and hence will not mention. Only major difference I'd have with you would be Best Actress which I think should go to either Tilda Swindon or from what I've heard based purely on outside input Rooney Mara who wasn't nominated. I've heard from 3 people who've seen Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and they each described her performance as "Earth shattering" "Mind Blowing" and "A Game Changer". Needless to say I'll be seeing Dragon Tattoo at my earliest convenience.

I was surprised there was no mention of Mara, as well.

I wasn't happy with many of the choices. No Dangerous Method? No Carnage? Opinions of Polanski aside, I've heard it's an acting powerhouse. Ben Kingsley for Hugo. And Charlize Theron? Maybe I'm way off base about Young Adult, but I just have a hard time taking it any more seriously than Bad Teacher.

Dec 14 - 11:36 AM

Steven S.

Steven Smith

That's a major error in judgement. Young Adult is by the director of 'Up in the Air', 'Juno', 'Thank you for Smoking.' Based on his work alone, it deserves more respect than a ludicrous comparison to something like 'Bad Teacher'.

Yeah I don't understand why Rooney Mara was snubbed.

Hobo With A Shotgun was funnier than any comedy I saw this year; it would have been awesome if it was nominated.

And Rutger Hauer just made it that much better by taking it totally seriously and giving 110%. What a Pro!

Why are the action movie, young actor, and art direction categories posted twice?

Anyway, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! GO DRIVE! Not a chance in hell that it will win, but I'm rooting for it!

Also, why did Andy Serkis get a supporting actor nomination?? He was the lead in Apes.

Can someone explain to me why people don't like Cars 2? It was terrific. I feel like people just like watching success fall, and Cars 2 was the easiest way to get it across.

andy serkis!
also
it's funny that it seems like it's hard for these awards people to decide what movie to nominate brad pitt/jessica chastain/ryan gosling for.

Chris Lambert

Why wasn't Andy Serkis nominated for Best Actor? He had a larger role in the film than James Franco. You could easily take Di Caprio off this list (he had so many of his usual mannerisms it's ridiculous to me that he was nominated at all).

Dec 14 - 04:18 PM

David Tanny

I'm bummed out that Brendan Gleeson isn't getting any attention for The Guard. Funniest movie of the year in my opinion. Best action movie should be 13 Assassins. And Deathly Hallows Part Two needs for love. Alan Rickman deserves a supporting actor nomination. Glad to see The Muppets get some love for their fantastic songs.

Dec 14 - 04:56 PM

Harry Potter didn't get best picture nomination. An apocalyptic barrage of flaming rage is going to descend upon the Academy from the fans.

Seriously though, with the exception of Drive and Moneyball, every Best picture Nomination is overrated.
