Movie InfoIn this film noir, a melancholy mechanic and race car driver is coerced into assisting two bank robbers pull a bank heist. They lure him in with one of the robber's beautiful girlfriends. He helps them with the job. The thieves reward him. Accompanied by one of the thieves he is forced, at gunpoint to drive to an isolated place where they plan to kill him. Instead, the driver wrecks the car and kills the thief. He too is injured, but somehow makes it back to the hideout where he finds the other robber beating his girl. Rooney is certainly understated and extremely effective. Richard Quine keeps everything in nice balance and by its downer of an ending, Drive a Crooked Road turns out to be quietly affecting.
... what I like to call beachhouse noir, a world away from the classic nocturnal urban style with its coast highways and sunny beaches and sleek West Coast architecture.
