Director Gus Van Sant generally maintains his highly stylized vision, regardless of a film's budget. His later films continue to illustrate the dreamlike moments contained in highly disturbing situations. The film captures a slice of Americana through the back door. Bob (Matt Dillon) is an energetic junkie who leads his wife (Kelly Lynch) and another couple on a reckless spree of drugstore robberies, for drugs. When he has a brush with death, Bob realizes he must leave both his addiction and his wife if he wants to survive. Van Sant's lush photography gives us a glimpse into these lives, lending immortality to people on the fringes of society. DRUGSTORE COWBOY is a classic film that launched the career of one of the most important American directors working today. [More]

  • Winner of four Independent Spirit Awards, this illuminating and daring classic about a small group of drug addicts was the breakthrough picture from Oscar®-nominated director Gus Van Sant. Bob (Matt Dillon) is the grungy ringleader and jittery mastermind of a junkie crew. With his frustrated wife, Dianne (Kelly Lynch), his loyal partner, Rick (James Le Gros), and Rick's juvenile girlfriend, Nadine (Heather Graham), Bob plots ingenious heists and spends the rest of his days sitting around the house getting high. When the heat becomes too intense in Portland, the quartet hits the road for small-town drug stores and hospitals. But when their luck runs out it does so in grand fashion, sending their lives spinning out of control.

One of the best movies ever made about characters who live on the fringes of society. Gus Van Sant establishes himself as a major talent with this one.

Lyrically shot, this chronicle of a bunch of bumbling petty-criminals who steal pharmaceuticals is a tad too straightforward by Van Sant's standards, but the dialogue is funnt, the mood nonchalant, and Matt Dillon is terrific in the lead.
