Originally released as WHERE'S THE PARTY, YAAR? this comedy spoofs every aspect of the Indian American experience, while maintaining the complexity of its characters, and avoiding stereotypes. Hari Patel has been assured that he will find love in America, so he comes to Houston to study engineering. He lives with his aunt and uncle there, whose son, Mo, is a college student fully assimilated into his American environment. A cool guy on the desi scene, Mo is ordered by his parents to show the ropes to the FOB ("fresh off the boat") newcomer, and he reluctantly does so. Unfortunately, the hipsters aren't so welcoming to Hari, with his odd dance moves and oily hair, and as Hari struggles to adapt to his new home, lessons are learned all around. From Bollywood tunes in the rain, to tricked-out Indian bachelor pads, no area of Indian culture is left out. Through the energy of the cast and the excellent soundtrack--which features the likes of Panjabi MC, Cornershop, and DJ Cheb i Shabbah--this fast-paced, hip satire with a heart is sure to delight. Reviews for Dude, Where's the Party?
Town mouse/country mouse isn't exactly the freshest conceit, but the poignancy of the identity issues and the freshness of the cultural glimpses push this film through the occasional slow and/or stale parts.
Mathews has obvious storytelling chops, and a sharp eye for absurdity.
Where's the Party, Yaar? is too corny and drawn-out to appeal to crossover audiences but may strike a nerve in Indian communities.
This film clearly understands its target audience of first-generation Indian-Americans and has its pleasures to provide.
The filmmakers joke about situations that will surprise those of us unfamiliar with Indian culture and amuse those who are. Much of the remaining material, however, is trite.
Filled with wacky humor and inside jokes that may leave Indian audiences rolling in their seat and average Americans sporting a quizzical look.
The story bogs a bit and seems to run long, but any movie that has cricket and high-energy Indian numbers can't be all bad.
Discretely dismantles caricatures of FOBs with deft send-ups of stock Bollywood leitmotifs.
