Based on the play by Harold Pinter, THE DUMB WAITER is set in the basement kitchen of a deserted rooming house, where eccentric hit men Gus (Tom Conti) and Ben (John Travolta, before his comeback turn in PULP FICTION) wait impatiently for instructions on their next job. Unfortunately for them, their predicament takes a bizarre turn as unsettling messages are received from the presumably abandoned floors above. Robert Altman's screen drama is one of three Pinter adaptations that were made for television in 1986 and 1987--the other two being Altman's BASEMENTS and Kenneth Ives's THE BIRTHDAY PARTY. Retaining the intimate tone of Pinter's original text, the film takes its time in building to an unpredictable conclusion. [More]
